The Kosciuszko Lookout (also known as the Kosciuszko View Lookout) is 2km from Eagles Nest, along the Kosciuszko Walking Track.
The lookout is on the crest of the Rams Head Range, to the east of Rams Head North.
If you are walking to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko, it is at this point of the Kosciuszko Walking Track that Eagles Nest is visible for the last time, to the south, and where Mt Kosciuszko is visible, to the north. Mt Kosciuszko is the one which looks like a big round hill, amongst the jagged peaks of the Great Dividing Range.
Looking down into the valley to the north, towards Mt Kosciuszko, the Kosciuszko Walking Track can be seen traversing the floor of the valley, where it crosses the Snowy River, then climbs out the other side of the valley, and out of view.
The lookout itself is a steel mesh platform, of the same design as the steel mesh walking platform that runs from the start of the walking track all the way to Rawson Pass (6km), there is a fairly substantial grouping of large granite boulders, and a low fence, possible to stop people from falling into the valley as they peer longingly at the mountains before them Attached to the low railing is a sign which tells that this indeed is the Kosciuszko Lookout, and has a small diagram showing the names and shapes of the various mountains before you, telling the story of the early explorers, and of the indigenous people of the area, who would hold ceremonies, and feast. There is also a small map which shows that Eagles Nest and the safety of civilization is 2km to the south, and Mt Kosciuszko is 4.5km to the north.
Mobile phone coverage here is excellent, but drops off in the Snowy River valley, before returning on the other side...
Read moreIf you’re looking for a memorable outdoor experience in Australia, the Mt Kosciuszko Summit Walk, 19km round trip from “Charlotte Pass” is an absolute gem.
It’s a perfect adventure for families with young children and groups of friends, offering breathtaking views and a fun challenge that everyone can enjoy.
The track is a Grade 3 walk, which makes it accessible to most fitness levels, but be prepared for some wind and cooler temperatures in the late afternoon. The weather can change quickly, so it’s best to start early in the day when it’s much calmer and more pleasant. The mornings are particularly lovely, with crisp air and clear skies, making the walk even more enjoyable.
The path is well-maintained and offers plenty of spots to stop and take in the stunning scenery. The summit itself is incredibly rewarding, with panoramic views of the Snowy Mountains. While the late afternoon can be quite windy and chilly, the early morning conditions are ideal for both comfort and stunning photo opportunities.
One tip: be sure to leave early to avoid the midday crowds and the risk of heat exhaustion. It can get hot later in the day, especially in summer, and starting early helps you finish the walk before it becomes too intense.
Overall, this is a highly recommended walk for those looking for a scenic, enjoyable, and family-friendly outdoor activity....
Read moreGreat walking trail with beautiful view and clean air. We came here late December during summer, we used chairlift 1 day pass from Thredbo. You can get some discount if you buy the pass 7 days earlier. We have got Thredbo cards from prior visit so the pass got loaded up automatically. Carpark at Thredbo got filles up quickly, so be there as early as possible. We reached there around 9.30am and already difficult to find carpark. We head straight to Eagle Nests. There is a toilet near the restaurant after you got off from the chairlift.
Make sure you pack enough water, some snacks and a jacket. The temperature at the bottom was around 25degree, but above the chairlift is quite cool and windy. We had to wear our jacket, although i noticed some people are fine with T-shirt and short.
The walk was quite easy and we did it with my 6-year old son. We stopped few times to rest, drink and snack whilst enjoying the view. We reached the lookout within 1 hour and had our lunch picnic before heading back to Eagle Nest. Walk back was descending and quite easy and quick.
We were lucky to still have some snow and great weather. Overall had a great...
