Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse — Local services in Gippsland

Stayed in the lighthouse cottage this summer. Parked overnight, and the 20 km or so hike started at Telegraph Saddle Carpark.

Tracked in summer 37 degree heat uphill much of the way, little shade. Make sure you have sun protection and enough water. Leave early. In true prom style, one putrid pit toilet along the way, shame as the prom is now littered with used toi let paper.

Finally arrived, and met by a long, steep concrete driveway (virtually crawling up at this point) and a sour faced ranger who blatantly ogled my chest, she had no personality or grace. Yes, she... This socially inept woman should not be hosting at the lighthouse. Other ranger unsmiling and grim. They hid in their office the entire time. The prom management need to place rangers who have personality and are hospitable, as the lighthouse is expensive accommodation, it cost us over $600 for 1 night.. Windy and barren, the bed mattresses were dirty and sagging. A toilet was broken. Positives were the other guests (rare to get this), the view, and a beautiful wombat. Walk back easier as the weather was cooler'. Glad I accomplished the walk, however I overpacked and did not drink enough water. Ensure you pack mindfully. Back to Tidal Creek which was a feral s-fi ght as usual.. and then home.

Hiked from Telegraph Saddle to the Lightstation via Waterloo bay. The Lightstation is an amazing place to rest and refresh before your return.

Tips

Book early, sometimes 3 to 4 months in advance. Try staying 2 nights, which is the max that can be booked. This is a very popular destination for a reason.

Carry your sleeping bag, food and garbage bags. Otherwise the rooms are warm and comfortable. The kitchen has a gas cooktop with enough cutlery. There is a fresh water tap in close proximity outdoors. Toilets are clean and hot water is available for showers.

Bailey from Parks Victoria is a very nice bloke. He is very friendly. He does the morning lighthouse tours at 830 am.

The final climb to the Lightstation is very steep. Please be aware.

Great views, and you will feel out of the world. There is no internet, so feel connected with nature.

Check in before you start your hike at the Tidal River Parks Victoria office. You will be issued a permit.

This was our first long hike of this natural (wife and myself). Traveled during end of March; cloudy moderatewindy weather. The first 14km was not that interesting (apart from the halfway hut), as it was along a gravelled service road. But after the walk to south point 6, we took the 6km walking track to the lighthouse. This was very challenging (washed out and steap) towards the last half just before we connected back to the service road. The views at the lighthouse and track along the coast was worth all the effort. Stayed at the banks cottage. Tea/cofee/milk, drinking water, bed linen bath/kitchen towels, bodywash/shampoo, drinking water provided. Unfortunately, we only stayed one night. And we did not get the lighthouse tour as there was "no one certified to do the tour" was available on the day. Highly recommend 2 nights stay. There was 2 bars of Telstra 4G mobile reception at...
