Embarking on a voyage to Kangaroo Island, often heralded as Australia's natural wonder, was akin to stepping into a living canvas, where nature unfolds in its most pristine and untamed form. This secluded haven, floating off the South Australian coast, is a mosaic of rugged landscapes, dense bushland, and secluded beaches, each element telling a story of survival, beauty, and the raw power of nature. My journey across this island was not just a travel expedition; it was an intimate dialogue with nature, and I am eager to share this experience, hoping to inspire and guide those who yearn to tread this less beaten path.

Kangaroo Island's terrain is a testament to nature's artistry, with its vivid contrastsโ€”from the stark, rugged cliffs that stand as sentinels over the Southern Ocean, to the serene bays whose turquoise waters whisper tales of an ancient, untouched Australia. Venturing into Flinders Chase National Park, the island's crown jewel, I was greeted by the Remarkable Rocks, granite boulders sculpted by the winds of time into surreal shapes, each adorned with orange lichen, standing against the backdrop of the ocean's infinite canvas.

The weather on Kangaroo Island is a capricious companion, shifting from the warmth of sunlit days to the brisk, invigorating chill of the sea breeze in a matter of hours. This ever-changing climate adds a dynamic character to the island, where each visit promises a unique experience, sculpted by the season and the elements. The best advice for any traveler is to come prepared; layers are your best friend, allowing you to adapt and fully immerse in the island's myriad moods.

Transportation to and around the island evokes a sense of adventure; the journey begins with a ferry ride from Cape Jervis, offering a prelude to the isolation and beauty that define Kangaroo Island. Once ashore, the sense of seclusion intensifies, with vast stretches of land whispering the luxury of solitude. Car hire is essential, as it affords the freedom to explore the island's hidden corners, from secluded coves to shadowy eucalypt forests where koalas doze, and echidnas shuffle through the underbrush.

Kangaroo Island is not merely a destination; it is a sanctuary where wildlife reigns supreme. The island is a refuge for many of Australia's most iconic species, offering encounters that are increasingly rare on the mainland. From kangaroos grazing in open fields at dusk, to sea lions basking on sandy shores, and the elusive platypus in its freshwater habitat, each encounter is a reminder of the fragility and wonder of our natural world.

For those drawn to the call of the wild, Kangaroo Island offers a profound reminder of the world as it once was, untamed and free. My advice to fellow travelers is to approach this land with the respect and reverence it deserves. Travel lightly, tread gently, and take the time to listen to the stories whispered by the wind and waves. Kangaroo Island is a place of conservation and contemplation, a jewel in the crown of Australia's natural heritage, offering a journey not just through space, but through time.

In essence, Kangaroo Island beckons not just as a destination, but as an experienceโ€”a journey into the heart of nature's untouched beauty, promising adventure, reflection, and a deep, abiding connection to the wild. It's a voyage that I urge all who cherish the natural world to undertake, to discover not just the beauty of Kangaroo Island, but the beauty...

There are very mixed reviews about this place.

In all honesty, there is more wildlife in other parts of Australia, but Kangaroo island does have some beautifully rugged scenery.

We did see koalas, wallabies, goanas, seals and echidnas. Sadly, the roos and possums were mostly road kill...we only saw x2 live ones in the 3 days we were there.

You will need your own car or a pre booked tour. It takes over 1hr to drive from the ferry to the other side of the island. If renting a vehicle DO NOT accept an EV or hybrid.. the ferry doesn't like them. An all wheel drive is more beneficial, as a lot of the roads are just dirt tracks with no tarmac..often rugged and with pot holes. NB. you will have to inform the rental company that you are planning to take the vehicle to Kangaroo Island and you will be banned from driving it between dusk and dawn because the road conditions are not great and there is a greater risk in the dark of creating more roadkill/denting their car.

1/2 of the island burnt down in a forest fire in 2019, but it is growing back well.

The island is VERY VERY quiet. There are very few restaurants (none of them great .. mostly burgers pizzas and those parmas the Aussies are so keen on). Theres also only a couple of expensive supermarkets. Mostly everything shuts by 8pm. It's literally like being in Scotland, where you can drive for ages and there is nothing but countryside and the odd farm. Its Isle of Skye quiet !

We visited in the last week of October. We needed jeans, jumpers and a light raincoat. We noticed there are also a lot of annoying flies on the island.

Nevertheless we did enjoy our stay and thought that Admirals Arch and the Remarkable Rocks were stunning.

Many of the activities on Kangaroo Island are at additional cost, including the national parks and they are not cheap.. so it makes for an expensive excursion when added to the cost of the 45min ferry to get there from the mainland.

You don't need any more than x2 nights here if on the tourist trail. Obviously if you are a wildlife/nature lover you will really enjoy getting back to basics.

If I were to visit again, I would either take a motorhome (there are plenty of free camping areas which are basically just car parks, but have toilets & BBQ facilities but no showers) or go fully self catered. Both options allowing you to bring your own food from the mainland and not be trapped into the poor and sporadic offerings...
