The Lake Tyrrell Viewing Platform is an absolutely breathtaking destination, offering a surreal and otherworldly landscape that captivates you from the moment you arrive. This spot is a dream for photographers, artists, and anyone with a love for unique natural beauty. The platform itself, with its unique circular walkway reminiscent of a crop circle, provides the perfect vantage point over the immense, shimmering salt pans. It’s an easy and wheelchair-accessible walk from the car park, ensuring everyone can witness the magic.
During the day, and especially at sunrise, the experience is nothing short of phenomenal. The way the early morning light reflects off the thin layer of water and the vast expanse of white salt is something that truly must be witnessed to be understood. The colours are simply incredible. By night, the area transforms completely. Being open 24 hours and with virtually zero light pollution, it becomes a premier location for stargazing and astrophotography. The clarity of the night sky is astounding, making it an ideal setting for any astronomical events.
Visitors should be aware that there are no toilets or other facilities on site, so it is essential to be prepared and self-sufficient. However, this lack of development is precisely what preserves its pristine, untouched beauty. Whether you are there to capture the perfect sunrise, gaze into the depths of the Milky Way, or simply sit and absorb the profound silence of the landscape, the Lake Tyrrell Viewing Platform is a five-star experience that will stay with you long...
Read moreLake Tyrrell is a stunning location that offers amazing scenery and is very photogenic, although it has a few downsides.
There are many viewpoints around the lake that offer strategic locations for photography, and a small town nearby. Additionally, the lake has a rich history that adds to its charm.
However, there are a few disappointing factors that visitors should be aware of. Firstly, there is a strong smell in the area, which can be off-putting. Secondly, the high salt content in the lake means that any wounds or scratches are likely to get infected. There are also places with "quick salt" that can stain anything that touches it, which can be a mix of salt and tar. Visitors should be sure to bring water to wash off any salt they come into contact with.
Despite these factors, Lake Tyrrell is a beautiful place to visit, especially for photographers who can capture stunning shots of the horizon. However, it is recommended that visitors spend a good amount of time there to fully appreciate its beauty. If you happen to be in the nearby area, it's definitely worth a visit.

It appeared to have a visitor centre a bit back from the lake, but I never went up to check it out, so no idea what the facilities were like. Other places around the lake are not as visitor friendly.
This lake used to have (may still have) an off road rally around it in the winter.. 4wd, buggy, and motor bikes... it took its toll on many...
