Built on the edge of the Southern Ocean, Ocean Dunes Golf Course feels more like it is on the edge of the world! Located on Australia’s King Island, just getting here isn’t the easiest of efforts.
But in our travels, we have found the places that take the most effort are always the most memorable. We have learned to trust our instincts and follow the seemingly unpromising roads. Going the extra mile that it takes to get to that great coffee shop that you’ve heard so much about. Arriving at that perfectly secluded beach that was so far out of the way. Or searching that back alley to finally find the delicious noodle house that you still tell your friends about. Because it is always in those places that we have been rewarded with the most unforgettable experiences. Our journey to Ocean Dunes was exactly like that!
We were completely blown away by the beauty and quality of golf at Ocean Dunes. Ranked 15th in Golf Australia magazine’s Top 100 Courses in 2020, this was by far the most underrated golf course we have ever played! It seemingly receives some digs for blind shots, but we weren’t once put off. In fact, we have played plenty of blind shots and have come to enjoy them.
Another knock is that the distances from green to tee on many holes would be a long walk, so taking a buggy is advisable. But when you are surrounded by beauty, the added advantage of the cart is that you can sit and just enjoy the views.
The greens rolled pure; all we needed to do was to get it on line and give it enough speed. Overly fast greens would make the golf course too difficult to play, as there would be no way to hold putts. The fairways were manicured to perfection, and the fescue grass played firm and fast. We especially appreciate being able to play golf shots on the ground.
Ocean Dunes was easily one of the most beautiful golf courses that we have ever played. The entire golf course offers stunning views that are a postcard photographer’s dream. Everywhere we looked, the views just seemed to get better. The par 3’s at Ocean Dunes are amazing. And there are some par 4’s that are unforgettable!
Ocean Dunes Golf Course exceeded our high expectations and is worth that extra effort that it takes to get to KI. And once you make it, we can promise you that it will be the golf course that you will brag about to your mates for...

It is an understatement to say they are both spectacular, but they are very different to one another. Our group of four played both courses twice. The weather was good overall, but our last game, which was at Ocean Dunes was very windy. For sheer beauty Cape Wickham has the edge, but only slightly. We all thought it was the more challenging to play. Fairways and greens were a little better than at Ocean Dunes. We were disappointed with the poor condition of the cart paths on Cape Wickham. In some places they were little better than a goat track. The path from the 16th to the 17th is in need of significant repair. On the other hand Ocean Dunes were first class. Ocean Dunes carts are the very best, while Cape Wickham’s are just reasonable. One of our group rented clubs. Again Ocean Dunes was well in front with better and newer clubs. We stayed at Cape Wickham for 2 nights and one night at King Island Hotel(part of Ocean Dunes). The staff at both get an excellent rating from all of us. They went the extra mile. Talk about country hospitality. There are about 15 excellent rooms at Cape Wickham and all have amazing views. The lounge, restaurant, administration and pro-shop are all located in what I can only describe as a very larger temporary structure, but for the moment it is adequate. After completing our 4 games we were evenly split as to what course was the most enjoyable. The bottom line is you must play both and if possible twice, the first time is a learning experience. Rumour has it that Cape Wickham is going to build a further 18 holes on the other side of the lighthouse along with 88 luxury apartments and restaurant. Sounds like a copy of the Barnbougle formula. Our advice - Go there, you won’t be disappointed. In fact you might think you have arrived in golf heaven. Can’t...
Read moreA huge thanks to Russell at Ocean Dunes for organising a 2 night, 3 days trip to King Island for our group of 8. Russell booked our rounds at Ocean Dunes & Cape Wickham, 2 twin cab utes , and accomodation at CW. On day 1 we played a warm up at the local 9 hole course which was very dry but scenic interesting & fun & they were extremely hospitable in the clubhouse. We stayed at the Currie Hotel that night & the rooms were all comfortable & clean & we had a nice meal there. Day 2 was Ocean Dunes. It’s a spectacular but difficult course with lots of blind shots and fairways were very dry which you would expect in a dry & hot summer but they were still very playable. It is definitely one of the best courses you will ever play. That afternoon we drove to Cape Wickham, checked in , had a lot of fun on the practise green for an hour before dinner in the clubhouse house. Next morning was our round at CW which is a 100% must for any keen golfer. It is a truely spectacular course with so many memorable holes. If you are thinking about a trip to King Island I suggest getting on to the Ocean Dunes website & let Russell suggest, design & book everything except the...
