After missing the summer rains, Todd River came alive again after a day's worth of steady rainfall. The first time it has flowed this year (2019). As the locals say, see the Todd River flow three times, and that is confirmation that you are now a local and will not leave Alice Springs in a long long time. I have been waiting to see the Todd River flow since my arrival in Alice Springs last October (2018). A few friends and people I work with have attested to this local myth giving themselves as examples. Some say they came here on a sabbatical and teo decades later, they are still here. Some say they came to experience what life in the red centre was like with just a few years as a target; a few kids later; and now owning a house, they have cemented their status as locals having seen the river flow innumerable times now. On another note, a few times I have heard stories about how the river used to sustain the lives of the local Arrende Aboriginal people who are the traditional custodians of the land where Alice Springs was built. Stories of how local aborigines used to live by the river.
