Katherine Gorge is stunning but the maps/signposting is chaotic. Sadly the signs on the ground almost never matched the map we were given at the tourist centre nor the map in the Avenza app. Some examples: We met a helpful guide at Notmiluk Centre and decided from the map he had that we wanted to do the (Green) Waleka Walk (Windolf Walk). Unfortunately as soon as we walked outside the green signs were marked as Jalkwarak. Cannot find any mention of Jalkwarak on the map. Then when we checked the paper map more closely and found it hard to identify the colours of the walk since the trails are all marked with white dots with a faint hint of a colour even though in the Legend the colours are clear. Cannot really make out for example where the Green trail is on the map. A strong green line would work wonders…. When we were walking around the blue trail (Yanbi walk) there were yellow arrows to the Lookout and when we continued the loop around the yellow arrows disappeared and there were very few markers Back to the Avenza Map - this was clear though as far as we can tell we were doing the blue map in the app labelled as “Baruwei/Jalete” as opposed to “Yambi walk” as marked on the paper copy. Sometimes there were very well built sign markers (shown) and the rest of the time there were no signs to be seen. The coloured arrows should start the minute you leave the Nitmuluk centre. Would be better to have 5000 little arrows making it clear where to go than a couple of dozen sturdy steel signposts….
Having been to a number of other parks in the NT that use the Avenza app with clear arrows on the ground were much better than the dog breakfast at Katherine Gorge. It really spoiled our walk….
