It's worth noting that there are no public toilets here. When we asked to use the caravan park toilets the response was "No. We get hundreds of people through here wanting to use the toilets, and it's just not on!" Management at the shop proceeded to put up signs saying the toilets are not for public use. And when asked what to do if caught short, the response was "Go to Shelly Beach". The attitude here left us dumbfounded, and we wonder if this location is indeed a World Heritage site, what is being done to protect the environment from people who are then forced to litter the environment with poo and toilet paper out of sheer necessity? The tourism brochure says the boardwalk was damaged by cyclone Seroja (April 2021) and due to reopen in 2022. Visited late September 2023. Like most things with Government in Australia nothing happens. Volunteers at the site told us there’s a proposal to have it repaired “who knows when it will actually happen”. The whole area is fenced off so you can’t even walk near them.
Government has plenty of money to waste when it wants, yet key tourism infrastructure for these regional towns get left in red tape and no action. 🤷‍♂️

   Read moreAs much as I love to see these lovely living fossils - stromatolites. I am sad to say the government is still yet to fix the jetty damaged by the cyclone. This is a geologically and biologically significant site. If people come over and leave disappointingly, eventually the attraction will be lost. I really hope the government will repair the infrastructure here asap. It is such an important site to the Earth...
