Penguin island could be a wonderful destination for a day trip with your family and friends. Penguin island gets its name from the colony of little penguins which nest in sand depressions under dense vegetation and in limestone caves on the island. The number of penguins that come ashore begins to increase in early March. This is the start of their breeding season. The waters surrounding Penguin island are home not only to the world’s smallest penguins but also to a variety of other wildlife, including wild dolphins, rare Australian sea lions, pelicans, ospreys, king skinks and over fifty other species of seabirds that nest on Penguin island and the nearby islands. Shallow bays and beaches make the island an ideal location for snorkeling and swimming. The boardwalks allow easy access to Penguin island while protecting the fragile ecosystem. There are toilet facilities near information center. You have to carry your own snacks and drinks from mainland to this island. Last but not the least, do not forget to carry a garbage bag with you as littering is prohibited on the island. You have to take your rubbish back to...

Awesomeeeeeeeeee!!! Be quiet, respect the nature, and you will spot some surprises. We spotted :

  1. Wild penguin in the burrow, ya, just a precious one, well.. it was 10am, so we are happy;
  2. A sealion napping looking like a big rock, which blended in with the surrounding;
  3. Pelicans were a bit far to see, it is great if your camera has a long-focus lens or you bring a pair of binoculars. But we were lucky to see 5 or 6 pelicans flew over us heading towards their nesting spot.
  4. A skink was around the penguin's burrow.
  5. Lots of noisy seagulls, fun to look at, and one of them pecked me on my head because I went too near to click a nest with 2 eggs. My fault 🤣
  6. A crab near the jetty while waiting for the ferry.

Oh ya, the ferry ticket is included the entry to the discovery center for penguin feeding. Worth going for the feeding session, and listen to them bark like a chihuahua 😄

The beach is so good, love the fine sand, if we visit again, we will definitely spend a whole day there...

We intended to only see the penguins but thankfully we went for the dolphins and sea lion tours.

Been to so many whale and dolphin tours only to be disappointed but March seems like a good time to spot dolphins.

The good thing is that if you visit here at the start of your trip, should you not spot any dolphins they will allow you to re-arrange another trip.

In March, the winds are cold so bring your warm jackets, and scarfs. The Penguin Island and feeding time are for rescued penguins, we didn’t spot wild penguins.

Spotted 3 sleeping sea lions on the beach. Good place for a picnic, but if you are just going for penguins (it might be hard to spot wild ones), aim for the feeding times.

Also if you are just there for the penguins there isn’t much to do, unless you go for a swim on the beach and a small hike on the island.

Ferry leaves every hour. Main land and penguin island has very shallow waters. Saw many people windsurfing and para...
