Walmendinger Horn — Local services in Gemeinde Mittelberg

Great alpine mountain to hike up along the western flank. Also has a cable car to ride up, but the hiking tour is much more gratifying and fun! Stunning scenic vistas!

No special mountaineering experience required, just a good stamina and good hiking boots. Can also easily done by children if they are generally fit enough. It is recommended to take some water and an apple with you in case the Walmendinger Alpe (a small lodge about two thirds to the top) is closed.

Good restaurant near the summit. Depending on where you start between 5 and 11.5km to the top and between 700 and 1080m difference in altitude.

The summit itself is sometimes a bit crowded due to the cable car accessibility - but then if I want to experience the solitude of a mountain in the Alps I choose different destinations altogether from the start.

Continuing to the south then crossing the Ochsenscharte and returning via the Schwarzwasser Valley makes it a nice...

Beautiful place with great views in all directions. Take good shoes and some aids if you want to climb onto the top, the part of our group that had sport shoes couldn't get through the snow...

Entweder man fährt mit der Bahn hoch, oder man macht sich auf den nicht ganz unbeschwerlichen zu Fuß auf Richtung Gipfel. Belohnt wird man in jedem Fall mit einer herrlichen Aus- u. Rundumsicht.

Die Bergstation ist ein herrlicher Ort um zu verweilen und bei gutem Essen oder einem Getränk die Aussicht zu genießen, die Seele baumeln zu lassen oder sich vom Aufstieg zu erholen.

Zum Gipfelkreuz ist es dann noch ein kurzer Aufstieg, den man allerdings unbedingt unternehmen sollte. Die Aussicht ist es in jedem Fall wert.
