On February 14th, 2015, my daughter, Elizabeth and I flew to Freeport to spend the week with my friends who have a condo and a boat there. We had a lovely time, although the weather was unseasonably cool. On Friday night, 20th, we started packing for a flight home to Toronto at 10:30 the following morning, 21st. We discovered a passport was missing, likely tossed out with the garbage. Elizabeth had a health card and a drivers license and we arrived at the airport early with hopes that with our entry information, they would have at least her passport number. What started as a nightmare turned into even more so, as we were sent to two police stations to file a report, which the police said they couldn't do on a Saturday. At one point when we got back to the airport with a scribbled report after pleading with the police, especially with a very uncooperative and mean spirited Corporal Ferguson, the attendant said the report was not signed and wasn't valid. More frantic phone calls to police station, then SunWing approved us getting on contingent with someone at the other end - Toronto - providing a copy of birth certificate or whatever. We were all set to get on the plane, and a call came in from the OCC - some Canadian organization apparently - saying that we could not go on the plane and had to fly to Nassau to the Canadian Consulate which wouldn't be able to deal with us until Monday. We were pretty well hysterical at this point, then a supervisor came over from the International airport, we told our story again, the clock is seriously ticking to takeoff, she took this matter into her own hands, called Corporal Ferguson, after having the foresight to google the police stations, finally spoke personally to the Corporal who acknowledged that she and her staff indeed did the incident report, and our saviour, Dorine Martin Dean, pe! rsonally escorted us through security and after hugs and tears, we ran out to the bus, last on of course and drove to our plane on the tarmac. My daughter and I owe a huge amount of gratitude to Dorine, and I tried to find her on the Freeport Bahamas airport website but couldn't find anything. She also provided a number 350-4227 which might be a phone number....however, if anyone reading this review has any idea how we can contact Dorine personally, please let me know.....many, many thanks! When we got to Toronto, we were waived through because of course we were Canadian, with the advice to file a police report before going to get a...
Read moreExtremely tiny airstrip you must walk on the tarmac around the cones when you get off the plane. You are then herded into the tiny customs area, where you are not given any direction however, when you get to the customs Agent you are then asked for a declaration form. At this time you are directed to a side of the wall to obtain and complete a customs declaration form. After this you are sent to a small room where you and the entire plane waits while the baggage operators unload the baggage behind a lowered iron gate. The baggage is placed under a tent and once complete the gate is then raised as everyone rushes to claim their baggage. No directions are given as what to do next but you are told to complete an app by some employees while told by other employees that visitors need not download the app. This was very confusing and ppl were complaining and mumbling how this was the worst system they had ever experienced. There is free WiFi to get the unnecessary app completed which is the only pro. Employees walk around just looking at you and saying nothing and you get these odd looks when you ask for clarification. Thankfully one Agent asked me was I visiting and commented that I didn’t need to complete the form. Walking outside the fenced off area of the airport you are bombarded by taxi companies and ppl meeting rides. The whole process was overwhelming and unorganized, like something out of a comedy of errors. So much for the “one happy island routine”. I hope I never have to go back thru the airport on Bahamasair. Sorry I didn’t get photos it was just a...
Read moreSHADY AIRPORT! Firstly, my husband and I are rule followers. We brought SEALED, original packaging vapes (ecigs) FROM CANADA. (WELL under the 100ml limit)We got the into Freeport with No problem. When we went to leave Bahamas, there was a couple pieces of paper taped to the walls (inside departure) stating that ecigs were NOT permitted in luggage (standard TSA and airline rules), OR CARRY ON (NOT STANDARD TSA, OR SUNWING AIRLINE RULES). When they THREW (and I mean THREW) our sealed ecigs in the “can” beside them. We asked why? “Because we can, we don’t answer to Sunwing” was our response. Anyway, we met lots of people that simply put them in their luggage to avoid losing ($100 in our case) in ecigs. Everyone on board has a battery of some sort, be it a cell phone, laptop, tablet, speaker, ereader ect…. So, moral of the story is….. follow the rules and get burned at THIS SHADY AIRPORT. Everywhere else, follow the carry on rules, as they are safe, and fair. SHAME ON YOU FREEPORT GRANDE BAHAMA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. You are forcing people to make decisions they otherwise wouldn’t make....
