Ralph, our guide from Monkey River Tours, was a true goldmine of knowledge! His Monkey River guided trips are truly professional and very informative. They include both boat and jungle walking through wild, pristine habitat. His knowledge and explanation of birds, mammals, reptiles, plants and trees of the intricate ecosystem was outstanding. We saw manatees, turtles, howler monkeys, iguanas, snakes, ants, bats, tracks of an ocelot and deer, crocrodile, egrets, pale-billed woodpecker, wood creeper, anhinga snake bird, night heron, frigate birds, pelicans, comoronts, osprey, black-hawk, vultures, kingfisher, the Provision Tree, herbs and plants for cooking and medicine, royal palm, Guanacosta tree, sleeping mimosa, and many other things I can't remember. He has lived in Monkey River Village all his life and gave us history of the village including what it was like when Hurricane Iris struck and wiped out the village and a huge area inland. His wife cooked us a delicious Caribbean dinner at their clean and comfortable dining room in Monkey River Village after our morning adventure. Then we were delivered comfortably back to our lodgings at Sunset Point around 1:30. All in all it was a wonderful and memorable experience. We would recommend it to all, including families! Thank you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTerry was our guide, and as he had been doing this for most of his life, he knew where to find all the treasures! He was knowledgeable, funny, and took great care of all of us. Definitely bring your bug spray, dress like you're going to fall in mud and bring shoes that you either don't care about or can hose them down later, because part of this tour you will be walking through the jungle! I have major back issues and was easily the slowest in my group but the trek wasn't hard, luckily. I also had Teva sandals (open toe) and was very careful where I was stepping, as to not be bitten by a snakes, but it was also very muddy because it had rained so much before we got there. My feet got a lovely mud bath lol We also had a delicious lunch of stewed chicken and rice and beans at the family restaurant, plus bought some great souvenirs on our way out. They take credit cards btw! They also take US dollars. Overall lovely experience! Got to see the amazing wildlife and fauna up close... just be prepared to be out in the jungle. Wear loose clothing/ something to cover your arms, sensible shoes, lots of bug spray, and you'll have a great time in very capable hands, like Terry! Enjoy...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe spent the last 10 days touring Belize on our catamaran. The cayes were beautiful and service was always top notch, but in all that we never truly experienced the people who make up such a remarkable country.
Our last two days found us anchored at no name point just north of Monkey River town. Enter Ralph and his skiff. After picking us up, Ralph immediately showed us the true warmth and the passion for nature that makes up the Belizian culture. He not only showed us the wildlife and explained what it was doing there, but he offered something so often lost on tours of this type; context.
As a former military member, Ralph balanced a practiced, intentional lesson with a sense of peace from nature that only a veteran can truly give. We are eternally grateful for Ralph and his passion as well as for what the people of Monkey River Town bring to the Belize travel experience.
Regardless of where you are staying in Belize, the Monkey River Eco Tour is an...
