The Island of Fish is one of those places that stays with you forever. It’s not on the package-tour circuit, so you don’t get the hordes of jeeps or crowds of day-trippers you find at Incahuasi. Instead, what you’ll find here is silence, space, and a sense of being completely alone with the Salar.
I camped here after a long day’s cycling, and it was perfect. The spot is at MGRS: 19KFT 24404 72349 — easy to navigate to if you’re crossing the flats. Water is the only thing you’ll need to plan for, but you can refill at Incahuasi, about 34km to the east. Once you’ve got that sorted, this place really gives you everything: no wind, no noise, and no tourists. Just the crunch of salt under your boots and endless sky.
The sunsets were spectacular — the kind that stop you in your tracks, painting the horizon in layers of orange and violet. Then the sunrise the next morning was even better: the light spreads slowly across the flats until the whole landscape glows. It’s a kind of beauty you can’t put into words; you just sit there, coffee in hand, watching it happen.
Practicalities? Yes, it’s basic — you’re on a barren island in the middle of the Salar — but that’s the point. The ground is solid, so pitching a tent is straightforward, and the lack of wind means you actually get a good night’s sleep. No traffic, no engines, no voices — just pure quiet.
For fellow cyclists, I can’t recommend this spot enough. After days of pedalling across the desert, this was one of the most peaceful and rewarding places I’ve ever camped. It felt like true solidarity with the landscape. No distractions, just you, the salt, and the sky.
Honestly, it’s heaven. If you want to understand the Salar in its purest form, spend a night here. You’ll...
