It's a little hard to review something like this, but I will try.
Within the city (Red Deer) it's easy to get down to the water. Opportunities are plentiful; Mackenzie Trails, the trail system, 3 Mile Bend, Great Chief Park, Heritage Ranch Trails, Fort Normandeau, etc.
But outside of the city.. things are a little more complicated. Development and private property keep us from getting too close along most of the rivers length.
There are opportunities here and there at bridges and campgrounds (Burbank, some day use areas) but to truly get away and enjoy the peace and quiet of the river you have to get a canoe or a kayak, or go even farther out.
I spent a lot of time playing along the river in the Sundre area as a kid and I can honestly say that it's an amazing place to explore. The water can go from blue to green on a clear day, to brown from runoff in a storm, and the ever changing route means constantly finding new areas to explore.
