I wish I can rate Camp Olympia 0 stars.
My daughter was so upset when she arrived at this this place. It was filthy, the workers lacked empathy and their ‘security’ was a joke with students sneaking in and out of cabins all night (girls sneaking into the boys cabin specifically). How do 2 night guards keep watch of more than 200 students?
The food is AWFUL. They were offering barbecues and chicken and food that sounded appetizing, but this is not what they served. Instead, they were served canned chicken that looked and smelled like dog food, stale bread with filthy glasses and utensils. A few of her classmates landed with food poisoning after eating there. If you make the mistake of sending your child, make sure you pack them non-perishable snacks or expect them to come home sick.
The bathrooms were a nightmare- they are all connected to the corresponding gender cabins, reducing security by making all cabins accessible to anyone who was able to find their way in. The toilets don’t flush, so you can expect feces, urine and period products flooding the toilets. The stalls were not big enough for you to stand in with the door closed and there were no lights making it hard to open the locked stalls. Many doors could not be locked, were broken, or were too high, leaving an uncomfortable gap under the door.
They do NOT clean the cabins. This is expected to be done by the students - mice and rats were running around all night and children sleep on the equivalent of gym mats, with remaining dirt, dust, hair, and any previous stains left behind from previous occupants. Camp Olympia staff are aware of the rodent problem and advise the children not to complain or call for help should they spot rats. The cabin doors had locks that were defective and all it took was to push the door hard enough and it would open. If I had known this, it would have been enough of a reason to never send my child to camp Olympia.
This is a problem enough, but based on the forested setting where there are coyote sightings, and kids doing whatever they want when the staff retired for the night, it is dangerous.
I'm certain any positive reviews of this place are made by staff or people who were asked to review positively in exchange for something. There is no way that anyone in their right mind would leave a 5 star review if they actually stayed here for more...
Read moreWe sent our 2 daughters here this summer. Though they did enjoy the gymnastics program that was well run and the coaches were super great! Overall though we sadly found a lot of very big misses and lack of management compared to most other camps in Muskoka where they and we have also been to. To start - When you get there they do not have any trucks doing luggage runs so are stuck lugging multiple kids luggages back and forth in the blazing heat or potentially pouring rain. When we got to the cabins very sadly both our kids counselling staff had the personality of a stone. Did not say hi or even introduce themselves to us or our kids! In particular one named Megan. Pretty well just sat there and hardly even moved out of our way as we dragged the heavy luggage passed them while they just stared at us and was a very weird uncomfortable feeling for both us and our kids. After this we went to go help our kids put their clothes away before realizing that this camp does not even have any cubbies!! So the kids are forced to live out of their luggage!! We have never seen such thing before at any camp. They only went swimming twice which we thought was very low and unusual. On the last day at pick up they had a 2 hour awards ceremony that we had to wait for that typically at other camps would be done on the last night. And then again had to lug their heavy duffle bags across camp with no trucks going around like other camps do. We do realize that their is a staffing shortage out their due to covid and that they may have had to settle for some staff who are clearly unqualified, but we also believe that it starts from the upper management and if they had senior staff or even the camp director going around doing their due diligence to help properly train these staff plus the other areas that were lacking that it could have been a much better experience for our kids and for us. They had pizza on the last day which was cold and bland and even a bit hard/crusty. Typically this is their time to shine and go all out to impress the parents (you would think). Other camps we have been to put on beautiful and plentiful buffets. We hope this review helps with future children’s experiences so that they can learn and do better in these...
Read moreMy daughter just came back from her very first week overnight camp at Olympia sports camp and couldn’t be more happier with her experience. I’ve decided to write a review because as a parent I’ve checked reviews and was a bit hesitant after reading a few bad reviews despite of being referred to this camp by 2 other parent. My daughter went by herself for the volleyball program. She’s a shy and reserved person so I really wanted an experience away from electronics, where she could connect with other teens her age ( she’s almost 14) and here’s what I saw and experience she shared with me:
