The canal has been abandoned since the St-Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959, and sections have been separated to accommodate roads crossing it. On one side of the canal is highway 338, and on the other side, an excellent paved bike path with picnic tables every few kilometres. The nicest section pig the bike path is near the town of St-Zotique, where the path goes through a wooded area. This path goes from Pointe-des-Cascades to Rivière-Beaudette, on the Quebec-Ontario border where it continues west on a very quiet road, but not separated from traffic for a few kilometres, after which it's separated once more, and goes as far west as Long Sault. Abandoned canal, crossed by occasional roads, so not navigable. There's a paved, mostly flat bike path beside it stretching from Pointe-des-Cascades to Riviere-Beaudette (over 30 km). There are picnic tables every few kilometres, and free parking lots here & there to allow you to conveniently explore different sections of the path. One of the nicest bike paths...
