The pure tranquility and beauty of this place is absolutely breathtaking. The gravel road leading to the parking lot is drivable for larger SUVs or pickups. Once you reach the parking lot (there are no signs but a few larger rocks blocking the path), it’s about a 3 km return hike from the parking to the tip of the cape where you will find unique rock formations, pools, rare arctic plants and amazing view. It was chilly when we visited in early July, so I would recommend bringing warm wind resisting clothing. The hike consists of a limestone barren which was easy, and a rocky shoreline which was a little difficult to navigate through; we had 2 seniors with us and they were able to complete most of the hike. Highly recommended if you have an hour or two to spend.

This is a remarkable place that should not be missed. Located near the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula and surrounded on three sides by cold waters from the Strait of Belle Isle, the peninsula of Burnt Cape has some of the most arctic conditions on the Island of Newfoundland. But it is exactly this cold climate, together with a unique landscape and calcium-rich soil, that allows northern plant species to grow here in a rich and rare variety. The 3.6-km2 ecological reserve takes up almost all of the Burnt Cape peninsula. And though it may have the coolest conditions on the Island, the Cape is home to more than 300 plant species-about 30 of which are considered rare. It is truly remarkable!

Okay, so the Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve is a magical place with very interesting rock formations and plants. Unfortunately, the access road is in terrible condition, and you will risk getting stuck if you attempt to get to the parking area in something like a Corolla. We managed to get about half way before we had to turn back, and scraped the bottom on the way down. With that being said, we did park and were able to get some amazing pictures of the local flora such as bog rosemary, orchids, and mountain avens. I love this place and will be back with four wheel drive. Definitely check it out if you're in the area, just tread carefully around these rare and wonderful plants!
