I went to this establishment for the first time yesterday. I brought in NHL 12 PS3. I wasnt expecting less than $5 exchange. I had looked it up on e-bay and the average selling price in the condition I had was $10-14.
However, I prefer to support local businesses. So I walk in and say how much trade for this game? He said 50c. I said 50c!? Are you serious!? He responded by saying that I must be a first time game trader, which is true I told him I have not been for over 20 years, and he said that my game to paraphrase him was/are/were "a dime a dozen".
Anyways I declined the offer. Then I brought him 2 games from the same franchise off the shelves, one much older but was more expensive than the newer game that was better reviewed. So I said to him how much for the older game, that was 34.99, and he answered $8 thinking I was asking for trade in. I said no I want to buy this but its 35 and the newer better game is 30? He said to me"the older one is more rare". At that point I had had enough because common sense kicked in and my searches on ebay on those two items indicated I was not alone in my market estimates. Rarity of videogames, I think a reasonable person would assume have little bearing on the price, as its not a relic from egyptian times. However, I would think that there was a demand for the game they would have made more of it?
I left. Interestingly, today, I sold my NHL game within hours for $8 on ebay. I probably could have gotten more if I was patient. Thats an increase of 1400% of my take.
Listen I totally understand that he (the store) needs to make a proft that is why I was willing to take $5 and he can sell it for $10 plus.
I am in no position, nor do I have any knoledge, nor do I thinks its appropriate to judge the character of the business or the store.
The only message I want to convey to people coming into this store to trade their games, such as parents or those unfamiliar with the industry, is do you research before coming to this store. Be aware of the market value for your item at wholesale and retail and the price agreed upon should be closer to wholesale.
I invite the store to respond to the comments regarding their market and wholesale estimates. Perhaps there is something I am not aware...
Read moreI been coming here since 2009 when I was still in High School back when it used to be called Microplay.
The first game I ever bought there was WCW/NWO Revenge on N64 and I was so happy to find that game because nobody else would ever carry it anymore. Ever since then I always been hooked on coming back to this store whenever theres a particular game Im looking for because I know they always have it. They also carry many adapters , controllers etc which I find convenient because my Sega genesis adapter broke back in the year 2000 and then two years ago in 2015 I bought a new adapter at their for my sega which made me so happy to be able to play my Sega again with all my old games as I was able to relive my childhood all over again.
I am a retro game lover and quite honestly most video games stores are useless to me for whenever im looking for older games and the prices are excellent for classic games.
I dont feel the need to ever order games off ebay becauseI can just go to games exchange to buy it for much cheaper. The staff is down to earth , helpful and they have a lot of knowledge for a wide variety of video games.
I noticed based on a lot of reviews on here that there seems to be a lot of haters giving this awesome store a 1 star review out of bitterness because they couldn't get their own way. Far as im concerned those butt hurt losers who are giving this store a 1 star rating can go cry a river back to their mommy's basement because if your a retro game lover then this place should feel like your second home. Why would you bite the hand that feeds you your beloved video games that are hard to find elsewhere? Most of the other stores in town will either be way too pricey or have a small selection.
So trust me if theres a video game you are looking for then look no further because Games Exchange is the #1 store...
Read moreThere are plenty of issues I have with this store. The prices are 50/50. Donkey Kong country for snes is worth around 25-30 bucks but they were charging 50 bucks and it had a terrible label. They don’t seem to test there games either. I bought Mario 3 for gba and it was super dirty luckily they gave me a different copy, however if I didn’t try the game before going back to where I live then I couldn’t have returned it. One thing they do have is a selection. They have plenty of consoles and such but the prices and the worrie that it won’t work overshadows that aspect for me. I’m only a teen and I’m too young to get a job so I don’t really have a big income. But I adore retro gaming and I’m dedecaded to the hobby but it’s hard to do so when the store with a good selection has price issues. They try to give deals but they aren’t much. I wanted to get wario ware inc and yoshi topsy turvy the y for gba. one game was 60 bucks and the other was 50. I already didn’t have enough for both and the worker says: “I’ll give ya five dollars off one game if your buy both” and that deal just wasn’t justifiable for me. The worker kept on trying to sell me those games though. I was looking at ps1and ps2 games. I already picked out rayman for ps2 and I was about to tell him the second game I wanted however he butted in and said “yoshi?”. I already said no to the offer but he was insisting I get the yoshi game. I just got crazy taxi instead and the worker looked a bit disappointed but I could’ve saw it wrong too. But either way I don’t think I will be going back because it’s to much to pay and too much risk buying games. The workers seem like like really nice people and if you live in St. John’s and have a lot of money then this place doesn’t seem as bad but I live across the island and I’m only a kid so this place just isn’t...
