Upon entering the establishment with two friends, we were immediately asked for identification which, of course, is entirely expected and in compliance with the law. That part, I do not dispute. However, the way in which the request was delivered was unnecessarily abrasive. In a moment of surprise, I muttered “Jesus Christ” under my breath an exclamation no more sinister than saying “whoa” or “oh my God.” The employee pounced on this passing remark, demanding to know what I had said. When I clarified, she responded with a smug, “Yeah, that’s what I thought you said.” The exchange escalated to the point where she went so far as to sarcastically comment that my mother “must be proud.” I fail to see how such commentary is even remotely professional. It was not an insult directed at her, nor was it aggressive in nature. It was simply an everyday exclamation, one that pales in comparison to what most customer-facing staff must hear on a daily basis — especially in a liquor store. To be spoken to in such a condescending, judgmental tone was not only uncalled for, but genuinely disrespectful. Customer service should never include personal digs or moral policing.
