The most rewarding hike in Hong Kong is the Pat Sin Leng ridge trail. It is a difficult hike, but offers you views of Tolo Harbor, both on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen sides of the mountain range. You can begin from either end of the trail. From the far Western side of the trail just before you descend (or as you ascend), you can also see Shenzhen quite clearly in the distance. The mountain ridge is called Pat Sin Leng because it has eight ("pat" or "bat") peaks named for eight Buddhist spirits ("sin") or immortals, and each of these peaks is marked with a sign on the trail.

As you work your way along the ridge, the views are great, but if you do this hike in hot weather (essentially May to October in Hong Kong), remember that you will have very little protection from the sun once you reach the ridge (the ascent and descent are largely protected by trees). Take plenty of water.

The Pat Sin Leng ridge trail is a roughly 23 km walk according to my steps when I walk it, and you can begin either from Tai Mei Tuk or from Hok Tau Wai. Fast walkers can complete the train in just over 3 hours and slow walkers might take more than double that amount of time.

Buses run to both points of entry, and if you want to begin from the Tai Mei Tuk side, some buses can take you to Plover Cove Country Park entrance, about 1 km Northeast of Tai Mei Tuk proper. If you begin from Hok Tau Wai, you will arrive at Tai Mei Tuk when you complete your hike, and that village has a number of restaurants offering plenty of refreshment, although not...

Nam Chung Trail offers a somewhat gentler alternative to Pat Sin Leng and the immortals. The trail is largely an uphill climb for the first half, but you can break the climb by a stop in a picturesque gorge and later some rocks - even possible to cool off with a quick dip!. Good views at several points, esp of the Pat Sin Leng Range, back to Starling Inlet and to Shenzhen in the distance. Do take sufficient water - there is nothing on route. To get to the beginning of the hike, take a minibus from Fan Ling Staion and walk down the road to Nam Chung - the trail stars just after the village. At the end of the hike, you wander through a couple of villages to the Sha Tau Kok road to catch the bus or minibus to...

Pat Sin Leng is a mountain range in the northeast New Territories of Hong Kong, located within the Pat Sin Leng Country Park. A beyond magical hike.. hard trek up from Hok Tau Reservoir to the Pat Sin Leng Range. The beauty of the landscape along the ridge is breath-taking as the hills and steep drops offer fantastic 360° views over to Shenzhen and over the Tolo Harbour. After trekking the ups and down of the Pat Sin Leng Range you are offered an early exit down to Bridespool Road or down to Luk Keng/Nam Chung. Or you can give yourself some added steps climbing up and down the 8 Immortals. The final descent down to Tai Mei Tuk does feel like the longest staircase in the world but the line of restaurants for a post-hike meal and beer are a rewarding finish.
