The island is named "Red island" in Chinese as the eastern part of the island is an outcrop of reddish sandstone which below to Port Island Formation, supposed to be formed in Late Cretaceous. This formation has very limited outcrops, only exposed on small islands in Mirs Bay including Port Island, Round Island, Channel Rock and Shek Ngau Chau.
