Sunset peak is famous for its beautiful scenery and the little stone huts on top. Sure you won't be disappointed when you get there.

If you're to plan an expedition to your third tallest mountain in Hong Kong (869 meters), there are 3 major routes you can choose from.

Most do not recommend the Wong Lung Hang route as it's rather steep and there are flights after flights of stone stairs. However, if you think you are moderately fit and can handle those endless stone steps, you may actually consider going up this way for a few reasons.

It's shorter. According to the official sign, it takes only 1¾ hours to reach the peak (not the highest point though, but a place where you can enjoy breathtaking view and you won't even care the peak is still some distance, like 30 minutes or so away).

When you get to the end of this route, you've basically entered the area with lots of stone houses scattered all over the hill, whereas if you come from the most common Pak Kung Au route, you'll have to reach the peak first and then descend to these beautiful huts.

Most of the Wong Lung Hang route is well covered by trees. You won't be roasted by the sun as easily. And when the sun pierces through the leaves from above, it's a very beautiful scene indeed.

Then when you go down, I suggest taking the Pak Kung Au way. Three reasons.

You'll have the gorgeous sea view right in front of your eyes for at least half the way while you're descending.

The height of the steps is on average shorter than those in the Wong Lung Hang route, making it easier to walk down, especially when the climb before has taken a toll on your legs and your body.

Once you get to the end of the trail, the bus stop is right there. A 15- to 20-minute bus ride will take your weary body back to Tung Chung Town Centre or Tung Chung MTR...

Alright time for some real talk.

I took a bus to Pak Kung Au and hiked down to Mui Wo Ferry. The hike itself is not difficult if you are moderately fit and used to Alps or similar mountainous areas. It's basically a flight of very steep steps from Pak Kung Au to Sunset Peak and then less steep steps to the ferry. Definitely easier on the knees to do it in this direction.

The views would be amazing if it wasn't for pollution. Thanks industrial capitalism. If the air was clearer, this was giving serious West Ireland/Connemara vibes. But it wasn't.

The silver grass is cool but the vegetation is boring and all animals have fled thanks to the loudest, most dangerous animal of all. Of which you get an absolute abundance. I hiked the trail on a Saturday so keep that in mind. But seriously, you are not alone for a second. Which is great, as long as you don't need to pee.

Forget valley open peaceful peeing in nature, you have to time your farts precisely to avoid offending the nostrils of fellow hikers. The trail has almost no possibilities to go off it, the hillside is overgrown and steep. If you find a spot to pee with no one around, TAKE it!

Having said that, also check your European/other county privelege at the door and enjoy the population density on this trail. Everyone is having fun and you feel safe amidst all these lovely people.

Don't forget to conclude with an epic foot massage....

Whether you are going to Phoenix Mountain or Dadongshan, Bogongao is a very important starting point. I climbed to the top of both mountains through this. I prefer Dadongshan. The rocky landscape on the top of the mountain attracts attention. It is definitely the best choice to shoot the sunset. Young people are the main crowd at the top of the mountain. It coincides with Valentine's Day on February 14th. Couples will go together as the home court. They encourage and take care of each other to test the depths of the lover’s mutual feelings, and build deeper in the extreme hard journey. Feelings. Many climbers who like camping choose Dadong Mountain. The gentle terrain on the top of the mountain provides more opportunities to build street-sleeping tents. I admire these camping brave men the most, each carrying a huge bag and carrying food and water. Since you are taking pictures of sunset, you must prepare lighting equipment when you go down the mountain, and be careful during night walks to avoid stepping on stone steps when...

I did it ‼️‼️‼️The Sunset Peak on the Lantau trail — same island as the massive Buddha. This was definitely one of the most challenging trails I’ve done. It’s a 45 to 60 deg climb by rock stairs to 869 meters. 10,97 km and just over 4 hours to complete it . It’s a difficult climb (((( I was panting like a bull dog that just chased a cat 😂😂)))) my heart was pounding harder than a ford cortina’s pistons. Chris is super fit and I had to keep up - naturally him having to wait for me every few hundred meters on the initial climb. As the 3rd highest mountain in Hong Kong it proved to be a rewarding climb. The best was when We climbed so high that we walked into the clouds. On the descent it started to rain and that was a blessing in the 30 deg and high humidity All in all Great company with a great pal of mine Chris and i learnt a lot from him today Sooooo we Ended it off by taking the “fast ship” to Central on Hong Kong island then a Ferrie over to Kowloon with a 1,68 km walk back to the hotel I feel Blessed ‼️‼️‼️

I began my hike by directly walking from the Tung Chung MTR towards Wong Lung Hang Picnic Site. Once you arrive at the Wong Lung Hang Picnic Site, you will see the entrance to the hike just shortly after marked by the signs to Sunset Peak. The Sunset Peak hike has a brutal start. The initial 2.5 Kms of the trail are purely stairs. Once you climbed the stairs and out of the forest, you are embraced with the mysterious stone cabins and the grassy plains up on this ridge line swayed with fierce winds. More rocks and viewpoints can be found before you make the short climb to the summit. There are lots of peaks right alongside Sunset Peak and they all connect with small paths off of the official path. So do explore all of the spots, enjoy finding different angles and have some fun while waiting for the sun to set. The walk down in the dark is tough with lots of stairs. It’s only 2 Kms to the nearest bus stop. At the end of the trail, you will end up at Pak Kung Au bus stop to head back to Tung Chung MTR.
