Shantang Street 山塘街 is a historic and cultural street in Suzhou, China, known for its picturesque canals, ancient architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. It is often called "Seven-li Shantang" 七里山塘 because it stretches for about seven li (li is a Chinese mile). Shantang Street is located in the Gusu District of Suzhou, in Jiangsu Province. The canal was built in the Tang Dynasty: Constructed over 1,200 years ago, around 825 AD, by the poet-governor Bai Juyi 白居易 to connect the city with Tiger Hill. It became a thriving commercial and cultural center during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Stroll along the cobbled paths to admire traditional houses with whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs that line the Shantang River. Experience the charm of the water town by taking a boat ride along the canal. Nighttime is especially popular when the red lanterns are lit.
