Born and raised up in a suburban quarter of Xi'an and away from it all after graduation from senior high school from more than 2 decades, I have been coming back often to experience the bustle and hustle which the burgeoning Xi'an has to offer. Every visit over the recent years impresses: the city is getting cleaner, chic and sleek blocks are rising here and there, historical sights are better preserved and presented, people are becoming more friendly, the food scene is mind-blowingly unforgettable (to sum it up, the realc essence of northern Chinese food is all in here: an assortment of noodles, dumplings, pancakes, rice balls, meat soups, stuffed buns, seasoned beef and mutton of the Chinese Muslim style, sliced chewy rice sheets in pungent toppings, Chinese-style kebab, local beer, sour plum juice, and many others). As someone who has spent quite a fortune in touring into the most splendid nooks of this planet, I found myself missing the Shaanxiese food during my 6-star cruise tour to the Antarctic onboard the fabulous French cruiser (Ponant Le Soleal) and also during my two-week stay in Svalbard's sleek hotel of Norwegian style, although the French and Norwegian foods are both pleasant surprises). ||||Brand-new, well-kept, quietly vibrant and impressively pleasant is this hotel. Girl receptionists are accommodating with ready smiles, whereas the young local boy attending the laundry room and business center is unfailingly pleasant - he is a real asset to this property as he answered all my questions and helped me out throughout my 2-week stay as to where to go and what to do. ||||The ladies in the breakfast room are delightful and informative. This hotel offers the best breakfast I've ever tasted in the whole of this country. They cooked everything by themselves and it was a decent spread on the tables. Many dishes bear strong local features and can be a bit surprising for westerners - but once you try them, you would probably not want to stop getting more onto your plate. The noodle station changes its offerings from day to day, the fruits are so fresh and the Shaanxiese pancakes are just to-die-for!!! I am not a person who is big on breakfast but to be utterly honest, I set my iPhone timer and get up early each morning to feast on those fancy foods they seem to prepare effortlessly yet magically. ||||The room is a big size and the bed is very comfy. Bathroom has a walk-in shower and the shower head (TOTO) is of the newest design which is able to spray water into a refined, intensive and gentle mist with a soothing power, making you feel so good on the face and body. Nobody is able to resist the charm of that shower head. ||||Room is very quiet. Location is great - getting around is quite easy if you know how to use Didi (China's Uber). ||||Gym is not too big but sufficiently equipped. There is a yoga room next to it which is nice and clean. The laundry room is a real delight - I used it thrice during two weeks and it only took RMB 40 or USD 6 in total (20 for washing and another 20 for drying) to get your clothes clean within 80 minutes! ||||Another magic about this hotel is the convenience store nestled to the left side of its entrance revolving door. Store keepers are from Hunan Province and have mastered the knack of equipping their tiny store with EVERYTHING YOU NEED in everyday life. I found and bought my favorite juices, ice cream, snacks and wet tissues all in this store and they even had "red envelopes" (a Chinese thing used to contain cash as well-meant gifts to friends, relatives or acquaintances) of all sizes!!! And this store is open until 02:00 am - which means I used the lift to come down to them many nights just to get something to drink or snack on. Fantastic, indeed. ||||The hotel is surrounded by a Bank of China outlet (ATMs are available 24 hours) and many, many restaurants. I must mention the one named "De Long Lou" (德隆楼) which hails from the neighboring province of Ningxia and offers a jaw-droppingly array of fancy foods: not-spicy-at-all hot pot (which is completely different from the notoriously spicy Sichuan style), flavored fish in a big bowl, various snacks made of flour and a galaxy of Chinese salads (cold dishes). The indoor furnishings are pretty and chic-Chinese, and the seating is completely comfortable and the whole ambience is like eating out in a chic restaurant in Southern France, so to speak. Prices? Utterly affordabe. That is why China impresses: if you know China well enough, you can get the same quality of life at less than 1/3 of the costs you have to pay in the West. It all depends whether you can get to the right people and places. ||||I am coming back to Xi'an more and more and I am sure I will stay in here again. Bravos to all members of staff working here. ||||Special thanks to Mr. Bai, hotel manager, who has graciously extended my stay at short notice and the team under his leadership makes the city an even...
Read moreThe hotel is a little out of the centre but it is in a good neighbourhood and our 5 night stay at the Citadines Gaoxin was just fabulous. We stayed in a Studio Room which was very roomy and included a nice kitchen area if you want to do some light cooking. Check-in is on the 15th floor as is the breakfast area. The whole complex has a luxury feel about it and it met all our expectations if not more.||||The reception staff were very good and most helpful providing a map of the area and directions for public transport, etc. The buffet breakfast each morning was excellent with plenty of choice and eggs cooked to order. Being on the 15th floor, the breakfast area felt fresh and roomy with expansive views of the area. The lifts to take you to breakfast or down to the ground floor were always very quick with little waiting.||||There are lots of restaurants nearby and ,if you need to change some money, there is a Bank of China right next door on the corner. We used the Metro quite a bit which is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel – it is very easy to use and extremely efficient. Taxis are also readily available. – we would just hail one down and the drivers were always very honest. Taxis are quite cheap, for example from the hotel to Xian Railway Station where we caught the local tourist bus (7 yuan each way) out to the terracotta warriors was around 30-40 yuan depending on traffic.||||Xian is a great city with lots to see in and around the Citadines Gaoxin is the perfect...
