Most things on Rarotonga are expensive, but car rental is one of the most expensive things on the island.
I do question so many 5 star reviews as most must be fake, as while the staff were all fantastic the rental cars are so old and so worn out yet are so very expensive!
The Nissan we started with had 192,000km on the clock, it lasted 5 days before the CVT belt snapped leaving us stranded on the side of the road!
I would have to say the breakdown service was extremely prompt and the guy that came was extremely helpful, he even gave us an upgrade for the night, a very old and tired Volvo.
In the morning I went to the office and they gave us an upgrade to the people mover which costs $60 per day vs the $45 per day that broke at no extra charge.
Was it an upgrade? Well maybe but it was older than the car that broke! And still had 120,000km on it and a very flat rear tyre that had just 10psi in it after trying to find a tyre inflation which is not easy to find in Rarotonga.
I just do not get it these cars are just so old and yet they charge 2x what you will pay in other places that have cars that are only a few years old vs 2009 or older on Rarotonga.
We even wasted even more money by buying the zero excess insurance as these cars already have so much panel damage that I am sure they have collected rental excess many times but have never carried out the repairs.

We booked a small car size for our stay in Raro, they picked us up from our Sunset Palms rental, and drove to the car rental outlet to pick up the car.
After signing all the documents which they made it very easy, we were on our way
I am mindful of ensuring that I check the condition of the car inside and outside and noting any damage which has to be added onto the agreement.
Now just a point of interest.
After we went to town and parked well above the footpath level, I noticed damage to the under sill on the passenger side, this was not noted on the documents.
I subsequently returned back to the outlet and explained this to them and had the contract changed, not a problem at all.
Later we extended the car hire for another week, and Raro Cars also realised that they had overcharged us, which they refunded the difference.

Payed the $20 to have car left at airport which made arrival process so much easier, there was a friendly helpful worker who found the car for us. The actual car was not the prettiest but ended up loving her anyway,reliable, very cheap on gas and aircon if needed. Raro cars also had phone numbers for 24hr issues ( which was not needed ) Went into shop on first open business day to scan licence and sign paperwork. All staff were friendly and helpful. Paid the $20 to leave the car at airport when leaving just gave it a sweep out and cleaned the mats and filled the gas. Left key in Dropbox. Bond and 10% discount for the month Hire was processed while in the air flying back to NZ. I highly recommend using Rarocars....
