Since the park has reopened they have put a completely new system in place. First, you have to buy entrance tickets on-line ahead of time. You can no longer take a leisurely stroll to the lookout over the volcano. Everyone is marshalled into a group, given a coloured hard hat to identify the group, and rushed to the crater. At the crater only the main viewing point is open and the group is given just 20 minutes. Then they are marched back. The lagoon lake is not open at all. Personally, I do not like the new system. If the weather is good, you will see the crater well. But as it is often cloudy, the 20 minute window may not give you a chance to...

They open about 5 minutes until 7am. Make sure you book a reservation before coming because they do not sell tickets at the entrance. Bring 2000 colones for parking. There is a waiver to sign if you are bringing children. Everyone must wear a hard hat for safety and to indicate who used up their 20 minute view time.

We really enjoyed our visit here. Tickets are only available online. The wifi is super spotty at the entrance and took us a long time to buy on site. Wish we would have purchased in advance. The volcano itself was beautiful as was the nearby lake and the trails to explore. It was surprisingly chilly for the end of June but once we got walking it warmed up. My youngest son wanted to keep exploring the trails but we were running out of time.

We got lucky with good weather, so we had a great view of the crater. It is a little disappointing that we couldn't explore around on the trails, they are all closed now. The volcano actually erupted the week before we went and the entire site was closed for several days. When the wind shifted and we were downwind of the volcanic gases, we understood why we were limited to 20 minutes.
