Just past the fruit markets is a bridge named after former Indonesian President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie. It was opened in 2019 to mark the 20th anniversary of the independence referendum which led to Timor-Leste becoming an independent country, and was understandably controversial. The Indonesian President made the referendum possible (after significant international pressure), but refused to allow a UN protection force, which may have prevented the Indonesian army and supporters killing thousands of Timorese and averted the widespread destruction that followed...
