Deir al-Muharraq

The 100 or so monks who reside in Deer al-Muharraq (the Burnt Monastery ) claim that Mary and Jesus inhabited a cave on this site for six months and 10 dayes after fleeing from Herod into Egypt - their longest stay at any of the numerous places they are said to have rested during that flight . for 10 days every year (usually 18 to 28 June) , thousands of pilgrims attend feasts to celebrate the consecration of the Church of al -Adhra (church of the Virgin) which was built over the cave.Coptic Christians believe Al-Adhra to be one of the first churches in the world.

The religious significance of this place ,they say is given in the Old Testament ;rememberer to remove your shoes before entering. In that day there will be an alter to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt , and a pillar to the Lord at its border. It will be a sign and witness to the Lord of Host in the land of Egypt ; when they cry to the Lord because of oppressors he will send them a saviour , and will defend and deliver them And the Lord will make himself known the Lord in that day and worship with sacrifice and burnt offering, and they will make vows to the Lord and preform .(Isaiah 19:19)

Next to Al-Adhra is a square tower , a 5th century structure built for the monks to use as added protection in case of attack . It has four floors, an old sundial on an outer wall , and a church inside .

The Church of St George (or Mari Girgis) , built in 1880, is behind Al-Adhra and is decorated with painting of the 12 apostle’s snd other religious scenes . Again, be sure to take...

Peaceful and powerful place dedicated to the Coptic Christian Faith. Father was gracious and did a nice job of explaining the history and the grounds, along with the importance and relation to scripture. It is documented Joseph, Mary and Jesus sought asylum here for 185 days. Jesus was age 4. Isiah 19:19 references the angel appearing to Mary to deliver news it is safe to go to Jerusalem - which happened on these grounds. As American Christians we covered out of respect. I am very...

Interessantes religiöses (koptisches) Objekt – aber keine pharaonischen Sights. Sehr freundliche Anlage. Schade.
