We decided on spending our 5 nights/6 days honeymoon at Royal Davui. We undertook a COVID test a few hours prior to our departure from Australia and returned negative results. When we arrived at Royal Davui, as part of the check in process, they made us take a COVID RAT (not a Government requirement). Unfortunately, this turned up a positive result on myself but a negative result on my wife.
We were then informed that we were required to go immediately to our villa and isolate for the next 7 days, meaning we would need to extent our stay in Fiji by at least 2 days.
Royal Davui advertises that they had the ability to care for COVID positive guests and would ensure their stay would be enjoyable. In fact, when the manager took us to our room, he mentioned that this situation had arisen previously, and they have procedures in place to ensure we stayed safe and enjoyed our time. When we arrived in our villa, we noted that there were no additional forms of entertainment (no TV/games/books/unreliable internet). When confined to your room for 7 days, this is an issue.
Our original package for 5 nights included 4 complimentary spa sessions and outer reef snorkelling. Now that we were staying for 7 days, this would have included further complimentary sessions as well as free airport transfers (~$1000 AUD). Not only were we not able to make use of these complimentary services, but when we requested the transport to be included as per the package on the website, this request was initially refused. In addition, we were denied housekeeping for our entire stay (no change of linen, towels, cleaning etc) and were made to feel guilty about requesting additional towels and linen during our stay (for us to change ourselves) and we were told that we would not be able to request further linen.
The process of ordering food was extremely painful. The process of ordering was to call through to the restaurant and place an order. Often, when we called to place our order, the phone would ring out. Even when we eventually got on to the restaurant, it would take a good 3-4 minutes to place an order as the staff were not familiar with their own menu and we would often have to bounce between several staff members to finally get our order across. The food would take more than 1 hour to arrive. Every single day we stayed at the resort, there were mix-ups with our orders with multiple missing items (not just a drink, but often missing one of the main dishes). Then this above process would have to be repeated to reorder what we had initially requested. The process of ordering drinks was even more difficult. Despite having a relatively limited cocktail and wine menu, the staff were even more unfamiliar with this list.
Overall, we were thoroughly unimpressed with Royal Davui. Despite advertising it’s exclusivity and only hosting 16 guests at any one time, there was a complete lack of personalised service and no attention to detail. It was clear to us that the managers main goal was to make money and he did not care whether his guests felt welcomed or appreciated. Especially with us needing to isolate in our room, the attitude was “out of sight, out of mind”.
To top it all off, during our checkout we discussed our concerns and attempted to give constructive feedback to the manager (Christopher Southwick). Instead of taking our feedback onboard and offering an apology, he became extremely defensive and attempted to put the onus back on us as the guests. He stated that Royal Davui was not a 5-star resort but is advertised as a “secluded private island resort” and therefore we should not expect to receive that level of service.

Read moreBula, My wife and I stayed in at Royal Davui for 7 nights for our honeymoon in the Sunset Villa and it was absolute bliss. Service: The people are extremely friendly and courteous. They call you by name and they made us feel like VIPs the whole time we were there. One of our favorite parts is you can have all your food and drinks delivered to your Villa and we took advantage of that. If something was forgotten when they delivered, they fixed it immediately. They are all so wonderful, but a big shoutout to David and Vincent and bigger shoutout to Paul! We miss you all already which tells you how great the service is.
Villa: We specifically stayed in Sunset Villa 5 which was our main reason we picked this resort and it exceeded our expectations. The views are unbelievable, the plunge pool was perfect for the hot days, the multiple seating areas were perfect, the outdoor shower was refreshing, the bath was relaxing, and the roof that opens inside was a cool tough. My wife and I really didn't leave the Villa for the first 2 days because of how nice it was and how private they are. You won't see or hear your neighbors. Also our villa had some fun animals stop by, like hermit crabs, regular crabs, birds, and a few fruit bats in the distance. There's air condition in bedroom and bathroom and all the doors/windows open so make the Villa an outdoor/indoor space.
Food: The food is delicious and fun. You pick your meals at the beginning of the day, with lunch and dinner being 3 courses and different each day. Breakfast has multiple options and you get to pick a few each morning. The presentation of each dish is always exquisite. If you're a picky eater, you may not like everything, but they do give multiple options. If you love food, you'll have no problem with the menu.
Activities: The free activities we did were snorkeling around the island, which was amazing! There are so many fish, star fish, a giant clam, coral, and a shark that we saw and swam with. We did some kayaking, paddle boards, and went on the hobie cat! They have crab races on some evenings which are really fun, the coconut class and cooking class were great and we learned so much about the culture. The Kava Ceremony was super unique and fun. That is very big in the Fiji culture which we're glad we experiences.
Paid Activities: We did a few massages which were wonderful. We went the town visit on Beqa island and loved meeting the students and the locals there. We also did the Bega island snorkeling which was amazing. Our guides on both trips were wonderful and brought us to see one the giant clams (the size of a beach ball) which are endangered. I highly recommend that trip. But by far the best part and you need to do is the Sand Cay Picnic. Unbelievable! They take you out to this small sand island and set up a picnic area with chairs, umbrellas, food and drinks and leave you out there for 3 hours. Make sure to bring your snorkeling gear because the water there is better than the pictures.
For transfers we did the plane ride to get there and then the car on the way back. We're glad we did that so we got to experience both and our driver was wonderful to talk to.
Overall, if you're looking for privacy, beautiful views, and wonderful service then this will be the resort for you. The must is the Sand Cay Picnic...
