I visited this open-air museum in Helsinki on my own and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my trip!

Right in the first cottage I met an amazing guide who truly brought Finland’s past to life. He wasn’t just repeating textbook facts. He shared lesser-known stories with such passion that I could feel how much he enjoys digging into history. From why red houses became a symbol of Finland, to how whole wooden homes were once moved across the country, to the hidden meanings in words like väki. Every detail felt like a window into another world. He was also kind enough to take a photo with me which made the moment even more special.

What impressed me most was the way he connected everyday traditions, like the sauna, with deeper cultural layers. Learning that it was once considered a sacred space, where life both began and ended, made me see Finnish culture with fresh eyes.

All the staff were dressed in traditional costumes which created a wonderful atmosphere and many of them were very knowledgeable too, happy to share interesting stories and facts.

Even though I came alone, I never felt lonely. The stories and people made the place feel alive.

Highly recommend this museum if you want to go beyond the surface and experience the soul...

In my short few days of visiting Helsinki, I got the chance to visit this one island and I could not have been more grateful! The island is accessible by public transport with a 20 minute beautiful walk from the bus stop. There is a small parking lot and bike rack as well. I visited in autumn, so it was not crowded. Got to see a few birds and squirrels even during this time. As the leaves were changing colours, the island looked incredibly beautiful. There are many walking trails, but no food places nearby (or not sure if those were closed due to off-season), so bring your own food for this short, beautiful,...

This is was an unexpected gem in Helsinki! It is an island which is a National Park / open air museum. Dotted about the island are lovingly restored houses and buildings which have been moved there from all around Finland. Some are nearly 400 years old. It’s also a great place to go for a long, slow walk in nature if you’re eager to get into the countryside, but not go hiking. I could not recommend this enough. There are places to eat and drink as well. If you get a sunny day, it’s as if you were in a little...

Magnifique expérience par une belle et froide journée d’hiver : de la neige partout, une mer gelée sur laquelle se promener, une île ouverte et gratuite et un charmant café où aller se réchauffer.
