23.06.2022.Сайменский канал, длиной 57.3 км , построенный в гранитном грунте за 10 лет, открыт в 1856 году. Соеденив озеро Саймаа в районе Лаппеенранта с Выборгским заливом на территории России. Попытки строительства канала предпринимались ранее несколько раз, начиная с 1400 годов. На канале построено 15 шлюзов. На строительство канала привлекались шведские и английские специалисты ,имеющие опыт работы по сооружению подобных каналов. За время использования Сайменского канала перевезено миллионы тонн грузов. В настоящее время использование канала приостановлено.
