The Svartholm fortress was built over a period of 15 years, from 1749 to 1764. Located just outside Loviisa in southern Finland, it can be reached by a commercial ferry in about 45 minutes.
The fortress was constructed to prevent Russian forces from entering the Bay of Loviisa. At the time, Finland was part of Sweden. Restoration of the fortress began in the 1960s and was completed in 1998.
Svartholm is a small island, but definitely worth visiting. The restorers have done an excellent job of making it possible to imagine what it was like to build the fortress and live there. A small museum on the island provides further insight into its history.
