A superb mountain loop with a great summit L'Aupillon offers different approaches from nearly every direction but I just LOVE the option I have taken as it's doesn't involve returning the very same way taken for approaching this mountain. I would rather classify this round as an epic but demanding circle. Directions: Heading for Les Orres by car take the turn off at Les Ribes towards Le Grand Vallon. If there is someone to take you upvalley by car you are lucky. Otherwise the approach is really long. The forest track is rough but with much care suitable for cars. At the right turn to Le Petit Vallon take this one (just in case: no more cars beyond this point). The track takes you higher and higher with L'Aupillon always straight ahead of you. It's unlikely to meet many folks in this wild part of the area. Instead there are plenty of marmots next to the foot path. The approach to the Col Nord gets rockier in places but only the last 50 metres or so involve some light scrambling. From the col it's not far to the summit (less than half an hour). Again: Use your hands if you feel more safe with them. Stunning views from the summit into every direction! Instead of taking the very same way back I have taken the left hand path at the col towards Lac de Sainte-Marguerite which makes a fine point for your next rest. End of my tour at Les Orres Les Stations - very different from the mountain wilderness of this day. This round is long and tiring and you definitely need a lot of stamina to tackle it - but I cannot recommend it highly enough!
