At first sight, Le Gerbier de Jonc looks more like a prominent hill rather than a mountain. However, it's over 1.5 km high and it will take you between 1.5-2 hours to get up and down it. I last climbed it thirty years ago and had no problems. Now, as a (fairly) fit retiree, I found it moderately challenging and reckon the route has also changed. For example, there are now ropes, including a kind of via ferrata, which weren't there previously. There are also a few steps strategically carved into rocks. All these additions are definitely useful, as are the blue arrows painted on rocks to guide you up and down. Regardless of your level of fitness you need walking shoes with good grip as some of the rocks are quite sheer. Once at the top you're rewarded with spectacular views in all directions. Towards the east, on a clear day you can see the Alps while the west gives fine views of the Cévennes.
