Musée Ardouin — Local services in Pamiers

This museum in Mazeres is a little gem. It has a wonderful interactive exhibit in both English and French on the 3rd and 2nd floors covering a Mérovingien discovery that was made nearby. (You start on the 3rd floor and move to the 2nd). The first floor has exhibits showing local history and a nice film in English or French on the Pastel industry critical to this area's success in the 16th and 17th centuries. The cellar of this former stately home has just been renovated to accommodate recently donated artifacts.

In addition to the museum itself, there is a lovely formal garden overseeing the river Hers and the hills beyond. The garden also includes a building housing medieval armaments. Lots to see and the staff is welcoming and helpful. Definitely...

I am amazed how few people from around here take advantage of this gem. It is really amazing for such a small museum with Gallo Roman, Merovingian, and Medieval artifacts, a great display about the history of the town and the Pastel industry here, and many educational demonstrations on topics like glass making in the Middle Ages, blacksmithing, fabric making and...
