Ujarma fortress — Local services in Kakheti

City-fortress Ujarma is situated on the right bank of the river Iori, in 45 km to the east of Tbilisi on Gombory Range. Three main periods of construction are defined. In the second half of the 5th century, famous Vakhtang Gorgasal ‘erected numerous buildings in Ujarma’ and moved his residence there. After Vakhtang’s death, his heir Dachi was ruling Kakheti for some period from here. In the 10th century Ujarma was destroyed by Arabian forces of Abul Kassim. In the 13th century, the fortress was restored by King George III, where he arranged treasury.

City-fortress consists of two parts: citadel, located on the plateau of the rocky hill and city on the slope.

City was surrounded by the powerful protective wall with nine quadrangular towers. The towers are three-storied, covered by tiled roof with loop-holes. City gates were in the first tower.

A royal palace – two-storied building with a vault - was located in the eastern part of citadel. Premises were illuminated by big and broad windows and they had hanging balconies.

In the middle part of the citadel was ancient church ‘Jvar-Patiosani’ (Church of the Fair Cross). There were dwelling outhouses opposite the church and big reservoirs to keep water.

The whole main system of protection was established in the epoch of Vakhtang Gorgasal. Ujarma is referred to the best samples of fortification constructions of the ancient Georgia.

In the second period (12th century) the destroyed walls were restored and new fortifications and dwelling places were constructed.

The third period (17th – 18th cc) was represented restoration of destroyed parts of the citadel’s walls.

I visited Ujarma Fortress during my trip through the Kakheti region, and it was a fascinating experience. This ancient fortress, built by King Aspagur of Iberia in the 3rd-4th centuries AD, holds a rich history. It was expanded and fortified by King Vakhtang I Gorgasali in the 5th century, serving as a royal residence and key defensive structure.

The fortress is strategically perched on a hilltop, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The complex includes remnants of the royal palace, defensive walls, towers, and the Church of St. Nino. The preservation efforts have made the site accessible and informative, with information boards and guided tours available.

უჯარმა — უძველესი ისტორიული ციხე-ქალაქი საქართველოში. მდებარეობს საგარეჯოს მუნიციპალიტეტის სოფელ უჯარმის ჩრდილოეთით 4 კმ-ის დაშორებით, გომბორის უღელტეხილის მახლობლად, შიდასახელმწიფოებრივი მნიშვნელობის გზის, თბილისი-თელავის პირას, ისტორიულ-გეოგრაფიულ პროვინცია გარე კახეთში, მდინარე ივრის მარჯვენა ნაპირზე. უჯარმის აშენების პერიოდად III-IV საუკუნეთა მიჯნა, მეფე ასფაგურის მეფობის პერიოდი მიიჩნევა. მის გამშვენება-განმტკიცებაზე ზრუნავდნენ ვახტანგ გორგასალი ვახტანგ გორგასალი და დაჩი. მათ დროს აიგო ციტადელი მძლავრი კოშკებითა და მტკიცე კედლბით, სასახლეებით და ეკლესიებით. მას შემდეგ რაც ვახტანგმა V-მ საუკუნის მეორე ნახევარში უჯარმა თავის ერთ-ერთ რეზიდენციად აქცია, ციხე-ქალაქმა განსაკუთრებული აღმავლობა განიცადა. IV-VIII საუკუნეებში უჯარმა მნიშვნელოვან როლს ასრულებდა ქვეყნის ისტორიაში. ციხე-ქალაქი აგებულია მდინარე ივრის მარჯვენა სანაპიროზე მდებარე მაღალ გორაზე და წარმოადგენდა ივრის ვიწრო გასასვლელის ჩამკეტ კარიბჭეს. ქალაქს რამდენიმე კარი ჰქონდა. მთავარი კარი ციხის დასავლეთით იყო. ციხე-ქალაქის მთავარ ციტადელში ჩატანებულია სადარაჯო კოშკები. ციხის ჩრდილო-აღმოსავლეთით კუთხეში აღმოჩენილია ორსართულიანი საცხოვრებელი ნაგებობის ნანგრევები. ციხეში ჩაშენებულია ჯვარპატიოსანის სახელობის ორსართულიანი ეკლესია. პირველი სართული შედარებით ძველია, მეორე სართული X-XI საუკუნეებში დააშენეს[1]. დაშენებული ეკლესია მაღალი ცალნავიანია, სარკმლები დატანებული აქვს აღმოსავლეთისა და დასავლეთის მხარეს. ეკლესიის კედლები აგებულია ქვის მსხვილი ფილებით და ნაწილობრივ ძველი წყობის კვადრებით. ციხის გალავანი გრძელდებოდა ჩრდილოეთით მხრიდან, დამრეც კლდოვან ფერდობზე, მდინარის ნაპირამდე. ამ კედლებში თანაბარ მანძილზე 9 კოშკი იყო ჩატანებული. კოშკების მეორე და მესამე სართულები განკუთვნილი იყო მეციხოვნე ჯარისათვის საცხოვრებლად. კოშკებს ჰქონდა დახურული, ბანური სახურავი. ბანის პერიმეტრზე ყოფილა ქონგურები, ხოლო მათ უკან დერეფანი-გასასვლელი. მდინარე ივრის პირას შემორჩენილია კვირაცხოვლის სახელობის ეკლესია. მისი კედლები ქვიშაქვით და აგურითაა ნაგები, ლავგარდანი რომბული წყობისაა. სამხრეთის მხრიდან მიშენებულია ახალი ეკლესია, რომლის ქვეშ მოწყობილია საძვალე. შეიმჩნევა ძველი კედლის კვალი. სავარაუდოდ, აქ უნდა ყოფილიყო მეფე ასფაგურის მიერ აშენებული...
