Rukhi Castle was built in the middle of the XVII century by Prince Levan II Dadiani (1647). The castle was an important fortification of Samegrelo. Principality as the Transcaucasian Road from Samegrelo passed through Abkhazia and the North Caucasus creating favorable conditions for trade. This fortress-city was also important for the protection of the ruler's residence in Zugdidi. At times of enemy invasion, the population could easily and quickly find shelter in the castle and hide their goods and property. The castle corsists of a citadel and a lower courtyard. At both ends of its oblong courtyard, towers were erected. The fortress is surrounded by 10–12 metre walls and the lower part of the Rukhi fortress is walled at a height of 8-10 metres with military ramparts on the top. There is another tower in the southwestern part of the wall. Currently, only four floors and a small part of the fifth floor of the tower remain. There are fireplaces and loopholes on every floor. The fort is built of cobble stone. There was also a spring in the castle, which could have been in the western corner, where today there is a small depression.
