Great views from the top but it can be very crowded. There is a cafe and lookout points. If you are driving, get there before 9am, since parking can fill quickly. I noticed people parked along the side of the road when spots ran out. Parking cost 5 euros or $6.
If you plan to take the bus, it will be 32 euros round trip or 25 euros one way. Once you make it to the top, there will be a free elevator taking you further up.
If you plan to hike, you can take the Kehlstein route up. Hike took 1.5hrs to get up. Elevation climbed from parking lot is 2,300 ft. There are other trails, but I found this one to be scenic. The path is very well marked since it is a gravel road 10 feet wide. The gravel then turns into asphalt. You can find mountain bikers sharing the trail. The hike is MODERATE difficulty. This hike can be HARD for some people. I did it in running sneakers. The difficulty is the steep hike. It is not technical. You just have to grind up. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes for hiking, bring plenty of water, and maybe a snack. There are flies on the trail, so either have a hat or something to...
Read moreReaching this iconic landmark is an adventure in itself. A winding road through the Bavarian Alps culminates in a 20-minute breathtaking bus journey with spectacular view of the surrounding landscape.
Upon arrival at the bus stop near the summit, you will walk through a 124-meter long tunnel that leads to an elevator shaft carved directly into the mountain that ascends straight into the Eagle's Nest.
From the expansive terrace, a 360-degree panorama unfolds, showcasing the majestic Bavarian Alps in all their glory. The interplay of sky, mountain, and lake creates a scene of almost ethereal beauty.
There is a short and easy trail leading to the actual summit of the Kehlstein mountain, which is slightly higher than the Kehlsteinhaus.
For those who enjoy serious hiking, it is possible to reach the Eagle’s Nest on foot. The trail is steep and challenging, and it takes approximately 2-3 hours to hike from the Documentation Center. This option is only recommended for experienced hikers with...
Read moreAmazing hike to Kehlstein but whatever you do DO NOT follow Google Maps! Follow the yellow signposts that say 4 hours but don't worry if you regularly walk as it is not 4 hours! It took us an hour from the 2 and 3/4 hours sign to get to the top. We were holidaying in Königssee and as keen hikers we wanted to find the route up to the top of Kehlstein. We Google mapped a route and also used the strava map to see the local paths. There's not much online about hiking up Kehlstein. However, in real life these paths are not walked and are not there. We went wrong twice and on both occasions met people also doing the same, the 4 hours yellow signpost is a major part in putting you off that route but it'll save you getting yourself 3/4 of the way up and finding yourself in a position where you can't finish the last quarter! This is such a rewarding hike and is easily signposted and...
