That such an attraction is part of the meaty Salzburg Card is a testament to the city's multivaried fare. If you have a Day 3 or more in Salzburg with all the usual suspects checked, this is the place to head to. It might even be earlier but for some stiff competition from the city's gems. Untersberg is a mountain (not a hill like the bergs of Salzburg) situated a fair bit south of Salzburg (14 kms) with the German border barely 2 kms away.
A cable car (the Untersbergbahn) rises from the ground and makes its way to the top of the mountain in what must be termed a steep ascent especially in parts. In parts, the ride is quite thrilling especially when it looks like the cable car is going to ram straight into the mountain! On top of the mountain, a sub-alpine paradise awaits.
There's the customary information centre upon arrival and once out of it, one has an entire mountain-top to oneself. While people do come here, the number does nothing to disturb the quiet. Happily, most seemed content to take in some of the jaw-droppingly spectacular views of the Salzburg area and then returned within 10-15 minutes for the return journey down. We lingered for quite a while and were rewarded.
A hike awaits here to the highest point of the mountain. Nothing challenging in terms of terrain or sheer drops, the surface is gravelly and therefore slippery. For most in the possession of a reasonable amount of fitness, it is eminently doable.
The true pleasure here though lies in sampling some of the staggeringly delicate alpine flowers that dot the sides of the mountain trails. Campanulas or Bellflowers abound.
If all this is not enough, places are ultimately about stories. Check out the legend about Charlemagne (or Frederick Barbarossa) waited on by a band of faithful dwarfs. In a quiet corniche, drinking the alpine air and savouring the vistas around, upon hearing gentle rumblings emanating from some cavernous inside, I could, aided by a tiny, wilful part of my mind adamant to reason and rationale, picture a haggardly emperor on a high chair surrounded a band of dwarves eager to please and supplicate.
All it needs is the...
Read moreMy visit to Untersberg in 2018 left me in awe of its majestic beauty and provided an adventurous escape into nature. While I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, I would give it a solid four-star rating.
Untersberg's breathtaking landscapes, towering peaks, and lush greenery presented a picturesque setting that was truly awe-inspiring. The panoramic views of the surrounding Salzburg region were simply breathtaking, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and hikers.
The cable car ride to the summit was a thrilling adventure in itself. The ascent offered sweeping vistas and a sense of anticipation for what awaited at the top. However, I would have appreciated more information or commentary during the journey to enhance the overall experience.
Exploring the trails and paths on Untersberg was a delight. The well-maintained routes catered to varying fitness levels, allowing visitors to choose between leisurely walks or more challenging hikes. The tranquility of the natural surroundings and the invigorating mountain air offered a welcome respite from city life.
The staff at Untersberg were friendly and helpful, providing guidance and recommendations for the best hiking routes. Their expertise and willingness to assist added value to the visit.
While Untersberg's natural beauty was undoubtedly its highlight, I found the lack of amenities and facilities slightly disappointing. Limited dining options and restroom facilities could be inconvenient for visitors, especially those planning to spend a significant amount of time exploring the area.
In summary, Untersberg is a nature lover's paradise, offering stunning vistas and exciting hiking opportunities. The cable car ride and the majestic landscapes are highlights that make the journey worthwhile. However, a more informative experience during the cable car ride and improved amenities would have elevated the overall visit. Nonetheless, I highly recommend Untersberg to those seeking a memorable outdoor adventure and a chance to immerse themselves in the...
