Moni Agiou Dimitriou Augou — Local services in Municipality of Ermionida

We followed the recommendations that we found in the reviews here - we started from Pelei and followed the dirt road. We had a normal car and it was a bit difficult but still ok, as long as we drove very slowly. We stopped about 800m before the monastery because the road was getting too annoying, but it might have been possible to drive all the way there. Walking would've been possible as well, it's approx. 6,5km from Pelei and it's not very steep. There's not shade on the road, though.

As for the monastery: the door was open so we took a look at the rooms and the little church (not sure what a church inside a monastery is called😅). Also not sure if it's abandoned or not since there were things there and some doors were closed. I suppose someone comes in occasionally? But we didn't see anyone there. In some older reviews I read about a monk living there but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

It’s a nice monastery on the top of a hill with great views over the valley all the way down to the sea of Iria. The place is not habitable but someone when we visited although there were some options if one was brave to stay overnight. Also there was an outside table where you might have a pick nick although it was on the sun. So I wouldn’t recommend it on a sunny day. The road from Iria is quite rough and even with a 4x4 will not be pleasant I would recommend to drive from Karatza village, as from that side the road is much better (although still dirt road with few bits...

Για τη Μονή Αγίου Δημητρίου του όρους Αυγού, ξεκινά από το ακατοίκητο χωριό Πελεή, φαρδύς βατός χωματόδρομος, χωρίς όμως καμία πινακίδα. Αφήσαμε το αυτοκίνητο κι αφού εμπιστευτήκαμε το GPS, συνεχίσαμε με τα πόδια, τα επτά χιλιόμετρα προς τη Μονή σε μια όμορφη πεζοπορική διαδρομή ανάμεσα σε λίγους ελαιώνες και πολλά άγρια πουρνάρια... Άνετος δρόμος με λίγα σημεία δύσκολα. Αντικρίσαμε τη Μονή κολλημένη σε ορθό βράχο, με μια κατάφυτη χαράδρα στα πόδια της! Φρουριακή, αθέατη και μυστική, σημείο καταφυγής πιστών ανθρώπων από τον 11ο αιώνα. Κάηκε δύο φορές και έχει πια λίγα σπαράγματα τέχνης. Στην ακμή της το 1696, είχε τριάντα μοναχούς και μεγάλη περιουσία. Στα χρόνια του Αγώνα ήταν ήδη σε παρακμή, κλείνοντας οριστικά το 1833 όταν ο Όθωνας κατάργησε όσες Μονές είχαν λιγότερους από έξι μοναχούς.Μια στενή είσοδος με αρκετά σκαλιά οδηγεί στον α' όροφο στα κελιά με τις χαμηλές πορτούλες και στον β' όροφο με τραπεζαρία και το σκοτεινό δισυπόστατο Καθολικό του Αγίου Δημητρίου και των Αγίων Θεοδώρων. Ανακαινισμένη το 1990 από τη Διεύθυνση Αναστήλωσης Βυζαντινών και Μεταβυζαντινών Μνημείων αλλά παντελώς έρημη.Τοπίο συγκλονιστικό, μοναδικό.
