Hydra is a small town on a small island, though you can find plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops there. All the beaches are located outside the town, you can take a sea taxi or a walk to get there. One of the best beaches accessible by foot is the Plakes beach, the walk there takes about an hour; the trip by a sea taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs 6 euro (return ticket, one-way tickets were no longer available in August 2017 due to the port's administration decision). Mandraki beach is another great option for those who don't mind a bit crowded beach with yachts parking there and music playing in the bar. Bisti beach and St.Nicolaos beach are located on the western side of the Hydra island, a sea taxi trip there takes about one hour and costs 15 euros. Bisti beach is a small hideaway place, a bit crowded. St.Nicolaos beach is larger and you can find a place to take sunbathes on the rocks away from the bar and the crowd. Hydra island offers a lot of opportunities for hikers, though some of the tracks are ruined or blocked, some roads are in a very poor condition. Still, it is perfect for...
Read moreHydra is a beautiful little island, spanning about 19 square miles. NO cars are allowed on the island, which makes it even more charming. Nothing like walking thru the streets watching donkeys, (yes donkeys) taking guests luggage from the ferry to their hotel. The town of Hydra itself consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which is centered a strand of restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries that cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots) alike. Steep stone streets lead up and outward from the harbor area leading to the residential areas where hotels and B&Bs are located. The town is so compact walking everywhere is the norm. One thing I noticed on all of the Greek islands I visited is their love of cats. Cats, cats, are everywhere, and the locals take good care of them! Food and water is set out at each shop, and there is even a store called DonkeyCat. Be sure to look for this shop on your visit to Hydra - it's charming, and the art is made by the owner's wife. Hydra is a beautiful stop in the Greek islands.... a charming, relaxed island where time seems to...
Read moreAn exceptional option about two hours from Athens! Truly a unique gem that needs to be cherished. The lack of vehicles only adds to the whole experience. Great people, great food and of course cats everywhere, if you are a lover to expect to stop every 5 minutes 🥳🤣.
The place doesn't have what we would call beaches, but there are a few rocks from where you can dive in the sea. People use this place to set up their towels and sit. it might not be the most comfortable thing ever but it works and the water is crystal clear with a very nice blue color. there are exceptions however with a couple of beaches who have beds and options to eat and drink, but these are not easily reachable by food. you have to take what is supposed to be a sea taxi small boats who take you to the places from the port.
Surprisingly, nightlife is not bad either with nice options to grab drinks and have fun with friends.
All in all whether you are looking for a place to visit with friends or your partner for a couple of days, this is a wonderful option. Dare i say one you might fall...
