⭐☆☆☆☆ (1 out of 5 stars)
I recently attended a music event at this otherwise majestic archaeological site, but the experience was extremely disappointing. I arrived 50 minutes before the expected start time, hoping to get a decent spot, only to find that the event was already overcrowded.
Despite paying the full ticket price, we were told to sit on the lawn because the organizers had clearly sold far more tickets than the venue could reasonably accommodate. There was no proper seating, no prior warning, and no differentiation in pricing. Sitting on uncomfortable terrain for over two hours was frustrating and completely unfair.
There was also no mention that seating was restricted, which shows poor planning and a serious lack of transparency. What should have been a memorable evening turned into an experience I’d rather forget — and certainly won’t repeat.
Very disappointed. Organizers need to be held accountable and do much better in the future.

The theatre was built in the 3rd century B.C. and it contains about 10,000 seats. He is considered to be one of the largest theatres of that period, and the ancestor of the colossal theatres and amphitheaters of the Roman era.
Along with the theatrical performances and the cultural events, this theater was also used as a parliament and a place of assembly for the locals ever since antiquity.
The first excavations in the site were conducted in 1895 by the archaeologist / politician Themistocles Sofoulis and they keep going also nowadays.
On every April, The International Youth Festival of Ancient Drama is held at the theater, on annual basis. This is a festival for Greek and Latin drama, either in the form of tragedy or comedy and it gather global attention.
Bottom line, the archeological site of ancient Messene is a must visit site! The entrance cost €12 and it covers...
Read moreWhat an amazing site, with some of the escavations, artifacts dating 3000 years BC. This place is huge, it expands over several acres and a fair way down to the valley. Ancient Messι is about 30 minutes away from Kalamat by car, it is located in the western foothills of the Mountain Ithomi and it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Depending when you intend to visit, if it is during the summer months, I would recommend going there early morning, the site opens a 8:30am Although there are many olives trees and benches around the site, it won't be as hot as doing your visit in the afternoon, and also if you come early you will have more chance to get your car parked in a shaded parking space. I would allow 2 to 3 hours to visit the entire site. After that you can also visit the Ancient Messini Museum using the same entrance ticket, though it is a very...
