It is hard to believe that the arid and uninhabited island of Falkonera, witnessed one of the greatest maritime disasters in the history of Greece, the tragic story of the sinking of the ferry - SS Heraklion, during a strong storm on the night of the 8th of December 1966. The disaster occurred near the island, during a voyage from Souda Port - Crete, to the port of Piraeus. It happened when a truck that was stored in the cars deck of the ferry got loose and broke through the main door of the cabin, thus allowing a massive water intrusion that led to the sinking of the ship. 217 people lost their lives in the disaster, and 46 people were saved during the heroic rescue attempts made during that stormy night.
