TLDR: Was worth the effort and 200Q cost of doing the Fuego add-on. But really is much harder than the initial hike up to base camp, so decide on Fuego add-on based on how you found the hike to base camp.

Was very difficult: I'm not in super shape, had worried about even getting up to base camp given how hard everyone says it is, but in the end actually found that quite easy. But the extra hike to the Fuego Ridge was much harder. In our group of 6 who did the Fuego add-on, I was 5th fastest, just about kept up with the others: we left base camp about 6pm and got back 22h30pm. But the last guy really struggled, got back after midnight, needed a second guide to go and join him and both physically supported him the whole way back to camp. So wouldn't recommend if you struggled getting to base camp, as Fuego you'll never manage.

But worth it in my opinion, once in a lifetime opportunity to get that close. And was incredible seeing lava come out.

Our group went super late (left base camp about 6pm), a bit disorganised by the tour company, but bonus is all the other groups which got there for sunset had left, we had the ridge to ourselves. And better to see lava later : I was a bit disappointed on arriving as first explosion was just a few dribbles, didn't seem worth the 2h it took to get there from base camp. But then saw two or three big explosions,...

Hey, we are Vicky 🇵🇪 and Malte 🇩🇪 from the travel blog 'Traveling Is Our Passion.' For our full Acatenango and Volcán de Fuego hiking experience with all our tips, check out our detailed blog post.

After reaching basecamp on the Acatenango hike, we decided to do the optional sunset hike to Volcán de Fuego – and it was absolutely wild! It's a tough climb, but standing just a few hundred meters away from an active, erupting volcano was one of the craziest and most surreal moments we've ever had while traveling.

We did the full experience with CA Travelers, and they guided us safely the whole way. The Fuego hike is steep and intense, especially after a full day of hiking, but so worth it if you’re up for the challenge. Watching Fuego erupt up close, feeling the rumble, and seeing lava shoot into the sky is something we’ll never forget.

If you're already doing the Acatenango trek and feel fit enough, we 100% recommend adding the Fuego hike – and going with a good team like CA Travelers makes all...

Beautiful hike and a fantastic experience to watch Fuego so close. But what is awful, is all the trash that is laying around the campsite and at the basecamp at the mountain saddle between Acatenango and Fuego. It's terrible, all the empty plastic and glass bottles and all the other trash that is laying around.

If you do this hike make sure to take all your trash back down. Even if you're with a tour operator you should still make sure that everything goes back down.

I think the Park office should charge a higher entrance fee and with that money they could hire more workers to ensure that this beautiful place stays clean and nice. We want to keep this amazing and unique place for future generations as well. It's not just about making as much money as possible and not caring...
