The Talaja Caves are located in Bhavnagar district at Talaja. The rock cuts are carved out into deserted conical rocks. The rock cut group includes 30 caves among which about 15 are water tanks. The cave has unique architecture known as Ebhal Mandapa. The halls are plain. “On the facade there are chaitya windows with a broad bank below them.” The chaitya and cells were carved during Buddhism influence in 2nd century BC.

ભાવનગર- ખંભાતના અખાતના કિનારે શેત્રુંજી અને તળાજી નદીનો જ્યાં સંગમ થાય છે, તેના કિનારે આવેલું છે તળાજા ગામ. તળાજામાં બીજી સદીમાં મૌર્યકાળના સમયમાં અસ્તિત્વમાં આવેલી ઐતિહાસિક ગુફાઓ આજે પણ મોજૂદ છે. આ ગુફાઓમાં બૌદ્ધ ભિક્ષુકોએ વસવાટ કરીને તપશ્ચર્યા કરી હતી.

ભાવનગરનું આ તળાજા શહેર નદીના કિનારે આવેલું છે. અહીં પર્વત ઉપરથી તેનું વિહંગ દ્રશ્ય નરી આંખને ગમી જાય તેવું હોય છે. તાલધ્વજ પર્વત ઉપર 30  ગુફાઓ આવેલી છે. આ ગુફામાં બૌદ્ધભિક્ષુકોએ તપ અને શિક્ષણ પણ મેળવ્યું હોવાનું મનાઈ છે. આ ગુફાઓમાં કેટલીક ગુફાઓમાં તો આજે પણ પાણીના કુંડ જોવા મળે છે. અને એ કુંડમાંથી પાણી પણ નીકળે છે. તળાજાના પર્વત ઉપર આવેલી આ ગુફામાં એક ગુફા એભલ મંડપ તરીકે ઓળખાય છે. આ ગુફામાં 8મી સદીમાં રાજા એભલ દ્વારા 999 કન્યાઓના સમૂહ લગ્ન કરાવ્યા હોવાની પણ માન્યતા છે. આ તળાજા ગામ નરસિંહ મહેતાની જન્મભૂમિ છે, આથી એક ગુફા તેમના નામ સાથે પણ સંકળાયેલી છે. આ ગુફાઓની વિશેષતા એ છે કે, અહીંની એક પણ ગુફાને પિલર નથી તેમ છતાં પણ આજે અડીખમ છે.

આ પર્વત ઉપર જૈનના દેરાસર તેમ જ ખોડિયાર માતાનું મંદિર અને એક દરગાહ પણ આવેલી છે . આમ તો ભાવનગર અને સમગ્ર જિલ્લો રાજાશાહી સમયમાં ગોહિલવાડ તરીકે ઓળખાતો હતો. અને અહીં શિલ્પ સ્થાપત્યોનો ભરપૂર ખજાનો પણ જોવા મળે છે. થોડા સમય પહેલા અહીં હાથબ નજીક થયેલા ખોદકામ દરમિયાન એક જૂનું નગર મળી આવ્યું હતું. અને આ રીતે અહીં અનેક પુરાતત્વ ચીજો...
