Shahjahan ki Baoli, and more popularly named as "Choro ki Baoli" (Thieves' Stepwell) and "Gyani Chor ki Gufa" (Gyani the thief's tunnel), built with lakhori bricks with 101 steps and several rooms in the subterranean pavilion flanking the either sides of steps of the well, currently lies in partial ruins and faces neglected.
The Stepwell built in Maham, Haryana was intended to alleviate some of the effects of the seasonal drought the town suffered through. In addition, some sources state that treasures looted during the Mughal army's wars were intended to be hidden inside the baoli and in the surrounding area. An approximate drive of 2-3 hrs from Delhi. This Baoli (Stepwell) is located very near to NH-9, Maham, Haryana and having a distance of almost 100 Kms.
The structure, which was built during the reign of Emperor┬аShah Jahan, collects and holds rainwater for use by the nearby town of Maham. While no longer in mainstay use, the baoli has been persevered as a tourist attraction.
