The Basholi Fort, at Basohli, Distt Kathua, though in ruins tells us how majestic the past here had been. Among the ruins of the fort a garden is being maintained but a lot can be done to make the place worth visiting.
The town was founded by Raja Bhupat Pal in 1635 who built the fort and the palaces, which are still beautiful despite their dilapidated state.
The town is also known for the miniature paintings called the Basholi paintings, considered to be the first school of Pahari paintings, which evolved into the prolific Kangra paintings. The first mention of the Basohli paintings was made in the annual Archeological Survey of India report in 1921.
