Sira, an important place in the history of south Karnataka, was successively held by the Vijayanagara Nayaka feudatories ( 17th Century), the Bijapur Sultanate under the Mughal Empire , Marathas (18th Cent) the Wodeyars and Mysorean Sultanate( 18th - 19th Century) and the British Raj (till Independence) . Originally constructed by Kasturi Rangappa Nayaka, the fort kept expanding and strengthening under different masters. Standing above a large lake, the Fort covers a vast area , providing ample defense on all sides.with its double walls and wide moat. The entrance pavilions (diddibagilu) have ornate pillars, rest of the walls and ramparts are plain . The Citadel, armoury etc which had fallen to ruins were renovated recently by the Archeology dept. Took an auto-rickshaw and reached the Fort, just outside Sira town. The construction of the fort was started by Kasturi Rangappa Nayaka of the Vijayanagar Empire in the 1600's. He was killed 'treachourously' by the Sultan of Bijapur, Afzal Khan while the Fort was being built. I have not been able to find what the treachery was. The construction of the fort was completed by Malik Hussain. The fort changed hands - Vijayanagar Empire, Sultan of Bijapur, Aurangzeb, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan. Finally the British defeated Tipu Sultan and it came under their control from the 1790's. There are beautiful carvings on the pillars. The carvings are getting stolen. The fort is abandoned. There is nobody there.

This place is located at the edge of Sira city with very good Lake view from the one of the corner of the fort, this place can be developed with gardening and other innovative ideas to attract the visitors. If this place is developed then this place will become one of the best tourist place in Tumkur district for sure. This fort is named after the Nayaka ruler Kasturi Rangappa Nayaka who had ruled over Sira in the early 17th century as a Palegar under the Vijayanagar empire.
