Sira, an important place in the history of south Karnataka, was successively held by the Vijayanagara Nayaka feudatories ( 17th Century), the Bijapur Sultanate under the Mughal Empire , Marathas (18th Cent) the Wodeyars and Mysorean Sultanate( 18th - 19th Century) and the British Raj (till Independence) . Originally constructed by Kasturi Rangappa Nayaka, the fort kept expanding and strengthening under different masters. Standing above a large lake, the Fort covers a vast area , providing ample defense on all sides.with its double walls and wide moat. Read moreTook an auto-rickshaw and reached the Fort, just outside Sira town. The construction of the fort was started by Kasturi Rangappa Nayaka of the Vijayanagar Empire in the 1600's. He was killed 'treachourously' by the Sultan of Bijapur, Afzal Khan while the Fort was being built. I have not been able to find what the treachery was. The construction of the fort was completed by Malik Hussain.
The fort changed hands - Vijayanagar Empire, Sultan of Bijapur, Aurangzeb, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan.
Finally the British defeated Tipu Sultan and it came under their control from the 1790's.
