Visited the Herman Gundert Bungalow in Thalassery today, and it was a surprisingly peaceful and serene experience. The bungalow itself is beautiful, with charming old-world architecture and a calm, quiet atmosphere that makes you feel connected to history. Thankfully, there was someone there to explain the life and contributions of Hermann Gundert, and they did so fluently and beautifully, bringing the story to life. However, most of the digital screens at the site were not functional, which I was told is due to pending software updates. Despite this, the place is still a hidden gem, offering a tranquil escape and a chance to immerse yourself in Thalassery’s rich cultural heritage. It’s sad that such a remarkable historical site isn’t more crowded, even on a Sunday, and it truly deserves more attention from visitors.

Reached Gundert Bungalow. The Google Maps location is slightly wrong. Keep going up the road and at the end, you will reach it. It was the residence of German linguist Dr. Hermann Gundert from 1839 to 1849. Sir Thomas Strange, a British judge was residing here. On his retirement he donated the house to Gundert. Dr. Hermann Gundert. The house is now a museum. He published the first Malayalam - English dictionary in 4 volumes in 1872. He also published 13 books in Malayalam. He started the first Malayalam girls' school here in this hall in 1839. He started an orphanage for girls in this hall. His grandson Herman Hesse, a Nobel laureate was inspired by his maternal grandfather and wrote 'Siddhartha'. You can see Gundert's personal library. The entire place is very well maintained. The entry ticket is ₹50.

Former residence where Herman Gundert developed the first Malayalam dictionary in the 19th century. Gundert Bungalow was the residence of Dr Hermann Gundert, a German missionary, scholar and lexicographer who is remembered for his invaluable contributions to the Malayalam language. In 1839 CE, he settled down and lived here for almost two decades. Situated at Illikkunnu, which is 4 kms from Thalassery, this bungalow witnessed several initiatives in the cultural history of Thalassery. The first Malayalam newspapers, Rajyasamacharam and Paschimodayam came out from the litho press set up at the bungalow. The bungalow was also instrumental in triggering social reform activities by providing English education and enhancing women’s means of livelihood by the setting up of tailoring unit classes.

‘Gundert Bungalow’, the residence of Dr. Hermann Gundert, a renowned German scholar and missionary of his times who lived here between 1839 and 1859, is undoubtedly, one of the most significant heritage sites in Kerala. Located amidst tall palms in small town of Thalassery in Kannur district of Kerala, the 200 years old bungalow with its typical colonial mansion style architecture, stands tall as a witness to many great works of literature and lexicography by the legendary scholar who spent most of his time researching the classical Indian literature and learning new languages. No less than a living piece of history, you would be amazed to know that the first daily newspaper in Malayalam, ‘Rajyasamacharam’, the first Malayalam magazine, ‘Paschimodayam’ and the first Malayalam-English dictionary took birth in this heritage building only. Gundert’s other works comprising of a Malayalam grammar compilation, a thesis on neo classical history of Kerala after the arrival of Vasco da Gama and contributions towards Bible translation in Malayalam, are counted amongst the most precious and are kept well-preserved in the bungalow for public viewing. Till date, Dr. Gundert is held in high regards by linguistic experts in Kerala and is honoured with a grand statue in his remembrance. Needless to say, if you are a literary lover or a history enthusiast, this place is a must see during your...

The sprawling 19th century bungalow located on a hillock in the suburbs of Thalassery is all set to become a language museum to commemorate the legacy of Hermann Gundert, the German missionary in whose name the structure, a tourism landmark of the area, is known.

Gundert Bungalow at Illikkunnu, with verandas and tiled roof, is being refurbished as part of the ongoing Thalassery Heritage Tourism Project of the Tourism Department. It comprises renovation and development of some of the historical tourism sites in and around Thalassery. The ₹2.10-crore first phase work of renovating the bungalow is under way as the Church of South India (CSI), which owns it, handed it over to the Tourism Department for the renovation works sometime ago.

“The bungalow will be developed as a language museum and language study and research centre with special focus on German language,” said P. Muraleedharan, Tourism Deputy...
