Vypin Island is one of the group of islands which form the city of Kochi and Ernakulam. It is just north of Fort Kochi and easily accessed by ferry or road. It is an elongated island, about 27 km long and less than 2 km wide at its widest. It is connected to mainland Kochi by a series of bridges known as the Goshree Bridge which is about 3 km long and touches two other islands. Another way to reach the south end of Vypin Island is by a ferry. There are ferries from Fort Kochi, Bolghatty Island and Ernakulam on the mainland. All the ferries offer scenic rides on the Vembanad Lake backwaters. We crossed over on the Vypin-Fort Kochi ‘Jankar’ ferry with our car, and the crossing took barely 10 minutes, although we had to wait for about 15 minutes to board it. The drive along Vypin Island is very scenic, although it is supposed to be one of the most densely populated islands in the world. One the western side is the Arabian Sea, and on the east is the scenic backwaters. Both sides are lined with pretty palm trees. There is a lighthouse and some pristine beaches lining the seaside, Cherai Beach and Kuzhupilly Beach being the most popular. There are many seaside resorts and restaurants as well on the beach front. On the backwaters side one can see many small fishing vessels and some Chinese fishing nets. Can b reached from ernakulum and fort cochi Famous Chinese Fishing Net is the old Fishing technique....still prevalent in Fort Cochi area and Vipeen island of Cochi, Kerela. Chinese Fishing Nets can be seen in Fort Cochi near Fort Cochi Beach... Fort Cochi can be assessed from.Ernakulum or Cochi city by bus or taxi , but it will take more time and cost too. There is lot of traffic jams in cochi city, so avoid travelling by road from Cochi city or Ernakulam to Fort Cochi area or Jews Town area. Better is to take Ferry from Ernakulam jetty, cost rs 6, time 10min. Ferry runs every 10min...from 4am till 11pm. U can take ferry to Fort Cochi or Vipeen island from Ernakulam If u r going to Fort Cochi first, take ferry from Ernakulam jetty rs 6, to Fort Cochi.......take a single day tour (auto charges 500rs....for all tourist places in fort Cochi area and Jews Town) In evening by 3.30 or 4pm.....take ferry from fort Cochi jetty and move to Vypin island in 3rs... Technically, a part of the island (near the boat jetty) is part of Ernakulam city, but the area is out and out rural in nature. The connectivity was solely through water transport earlier to the metro in the east but the villages in the northern side were connected by means of exceptionally narrow roads right up to N. Parur (now North Paravur). Severe shortage of fresh water and very very high density of population was a paradox of this place. You have sea on one side and backwaters on the other which is great for views in early mornings and late evenings. Nice place to roam around during free time.
